MOMA Soundings: A Contemporary Score. MoMA’s first major exhibition of sound art presents work by 16 of the most innovative contemporary artists working with sound.
While these artists approach sound from a variety of disciplinary angles—the visual arts, architecture, performance, computer programming, and music—they share an interest in working with, rather than against or independent of, material realities and environments. Alvin Lucier. Alvin Lucier (born May 14, 1931) is an American composer of experimental music and sound installations that explore acoustic phenomena and auditory perception.
A long-time music professor at Wesleyan University, Lucier was a member of the influential Sonic Arts Union, which included Robert Ashley, David Behrman, and Gordon Mumma. Much of his work is influenced by science and explores the physical properties of sound itself: resonance of spaces, phase interference between closely tuned pitches, and the transmission of sound through physical media.

'DEAD TIME: Narrator’s Script’ Opening with silence, or more accurately with the absence of action, Cally Spooner’s ‘DEAD TIME: Narrator’s Script’ (2019-2021) introduces the listener to an altered sense of time in which no major event nor narrative development takes place.
The script is one element drawn from Spooner’s 63-page performance score ‘DEAD TIME’ (2018) which she has been incrementally translating through live performance and installation since composing it in Autumn 2018. The ‘DEAD TIME’ score is set in “a surveillance-capitalist crime scene” where an absurdist ecosystem of living and non-living characters co-exist in a resistant, pervading present-tense atmosphere; waiting, rehearsing, repeating, yet never quite converging. The Narrator is both a single male voice and solo piano. This particular reading was recorded with a live audience at Camden Arts Centre, London, on the 11th March 2020. Using the cave as a physical metaphor for the mind the cavern personifies an assumed consciousness. In the darkness, a symphony of sounds unfold from the fissure between reality and imagination, swirling an inner dialogue down a curious yet treacherous path of self-identity. Entirely hollow aside from the dark is an artwork created by AlanJames Burns, made in collaboration with writer Sue Rainsford and sound editor Ian Dunphy. Entirely hollow aside from the dark was initially commissioned by Fingal County Council Arts Office for its Resort Revelations programme 2016. A 2017 national tour of this work is core funded by the Arts Council of Ireland Touring and Dissemination of Work Scheme and kindly supported by Creative Ireland.

Vancouver Soundscape Chronicles }{ Bell Tower of False Creek. “Bell Tower of False Creek” is a multimedia research/creation project investigating the rich history and complex sociocultural dynamics in play in the area surrounding Burrard Bridge, which spans False Creek in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
It began while on assignment making new recordings for the archive of the World Soundscape Project as part of my postdoctoral fellowship at Simon Fraser University. In the spring of 2013 a sonorous pothole on the bridge surface had opened up next to the metal connector sitting directly atop of the southwest concrete pillar on the shore, sending out loud and rhythmic clanging sounds when activated by passing traffic, intensified by the hollow concrete structures below.
