Photo As I walked past the booth staffed by robots selling robots, the plants that water themselves and the prototype Mercedes with no driver at the International CES trade show last week, it occurred to me that the future of human existence might not require many humans.
At CES, the huge technology event in Las Vegas, reality is reconfigured and purportedly improved by the presence of software and machines and the absence of actual people. I watched one guy put on a pair of virtual reality glasses, then get strapped into a big, complicated contraption that mapped his movements as he trotted along hunting with a futuristic gun. I wanted to tell him: Find some friends, go outside, play paintball, run in three actual dimensions. Neil S. CES 2015 Trends To Watch: Virtual Reality Virtual Reality (VR) may seem like something plucked out of science fiction novel, but recent advancements and notable acquisitions will have the technology be on many marketers minds as they go into CES this year.
In this post I will explore some of trends I believe we’ll see emerge in 2015 as well as highlight examples of how brands are already utilizing the technology. Let’s take a step back and look at some of the news in 2014 that that’s driving this excitement and speculated adoption in 2015. Facebook acquired Oculus RIFT for a staggering $2 billion dollars; Samsung released Gear, for Galaxy, Google and Mozilla will soon update their browsers to support web VR. Gaming companies and studios are scrambling to build content and the VC community is investing heavily. Deborah Wahl Tapped as McDonald's U.S. Marketing Chief. McDonald's Corp. is tapping a consumer marketing executive with a history in the homebuilding and automotive industries as its new chief marketer for the U.S.
CES 2015 Trends To Watch: Wearables — CES 2015 Trends To Watch. As in years past, we’ll see a lot of wearable products on the floor at CES in 2015.
Many of these products, however, will likely become obsolete only a few months after the show. The culprit, Apple’s Watch, scheduled for release in early 2015. The tech community is already referring to this period leading up as “Before Apple Watch” (BAW). CES 2015 Trends: Rise Of The Drones — Innovation In Media & Marketing. CES 2015 Trends To Watch: Rise Of The Drones For the second post in my series, CES 2015 Trends To Watch, I’ll be touching on drones, how brands are currently using them what to think about going into CES.
While the idea of drone delivery services, the deployment of medical care to remote locations and disaster relief efforts are exciting, I’m cautiously optimistic when it comes to brand advertising. Regulatory restrictions, privacy concerns and potential consumer backlash should all should be top-of-mind for marketers thinking about getting into the space. In this post, I’ll be addressing some of these issues as well as highlighting brands currently integrating drones it into their marketing tactics. Regulatory Issues: CES 2015: Hospitality Brands Take Guests on Personalized Tech Journey. The macro-shift toward the consumer is nothing new for the hospitality industry.

SoundCloud Labs Showcases Experimental Music Apps. Audio platform SoundCloud has announced the arrival of SoundCloud Labs, a site — much like Google Labs — where employees of the company can showcase experimental projects built on the platform's API. SoundCloud, which launched in 2008, now has more than 4 million registered users, and is quickly becoming ubiquitous in the music tech space. Included in a ton of music-sharing/promotional apps (including Facebook apps like Band Pages and damntheradio, and now Headliner.fm), the service is quickly becoming a go-to source for musicians looking to showcase their jams.
(One of my favorite bands, Man Man, premiered its new album via a SoundCloud stream just the other day.) Now, the site aims to build out even more tools using the SoundCloud API, and users will be afforded the chance to offer feedback to the platform's developers. CES 2013: Connected Devices and the Internet of Things. The Internet of Things and connected devices will be all the rage at the Consumer Electronics Show next week in Las Vegas, as companies seek to wow the audience with connected fridges, iOS-based home-automation products, and dongles galore that will connect everything in your home to some wireless standard or another.
But amid the excitement and heady rush, it’s worth understanding what the Internet of Things really is and how it will make money. To that end, here are a few handy questions about this developing technology: These aren’t exhaustive, but they are a start, and I find them especially useful as we see more and more projects on Kickstarter, hyped stories about cool devices, and venture capital deals galore. Feel free to share your own questions or thoughts as well. Connected devices are nothing without a service, so where is the service? At CES 2013, Could "Connected Home" Become a Reality? - Lauren Goode - Product News. At last year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Wi-Fi-connected home appliances were chattier than a six-person sitcom ensemble.
Fridges tweeted, told you what groceries to buy and then talked to the oven. Washers and dryers messaged the “smart” TV when the wash cycle was done, and robotic vacuums responded to a tap on a smartphone app. But at this year’s International CES it could be the smaller home devices that win the spotlight — likely a Wi-Fi connected spotlight. Driven partly by innovation and partly by pure necessity — regular old incandescent bulbs are slowly being phased out in favor of energy-efficent ones — the newest wave of lightbulbs come with built-in technology that let consumers control them with simple mobile apps, so they can turn on, turn off and create ambient scenes with the flick of a smartphone.
And despite the high cost of LED bulbs, consumers seem to be turned on by them. It’s one thing to come home from work and fire up a couple of mobile apps. CES 2013: This Will Be The Year Of The Gadget Startup. “Microsoft Bows Out Of CES 2013″ read the headline. It was December 21, 2011, several short weeks before CES 2012 and Microsoft just dropped a bomb: Microsoft would not be returning to CES. Steve Ballmer’s 2012 CES keynote would be his last. It was clear the consumer electronics landscape was changing. What CES 2013 will bring: Startups, Qualcomm’s coming out party, and fewer tablets. This year’s Consumer Electronics Show is shaping up to be strikingly different from previous years — and it may just hint at changes for the entire technology industry in 2013.
Tablets have been the highlight of the past few shows, but they seem less important this time around. And Microsoft, which previously kicked things off with an opening keynote and a major presence on the show floor, is taking a major step back (likely to focus on its own events, like the recent massive Build conference). For all the hype, companies, and press at CES, we haven’t seen any truly major announcements over the past few years. (The last big one I can remember was the blowout Palm Pre reveal from 2009.)
Other companies will inevitably fill the vacuum created by Microsoft’s absence. Cool gadgets and hot tech that will shine at CES 2013. With less than a week to go before this year’s International CES Show in Las Vegas commences, it’s unclear which new products will generate the most buzz among attendees of the massive trade show. However, Ultra HDTVs, Windows 8 tablets, smart appliances, and smartphone apps figure to fight for center stage. Tech companies tend to be tight-lipped about specific product details in the run-up to the biggest tech trade show of the year, but we expect the march toward total connectivity to continue on the CES showfloor. Camera-equipped smart vacuum cleaners, Internet-connected TVs, mobile apps for controlling your home’s heat, and Wi-Fi cameras that can upload your photos to Facebook will dot the large landscape of the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Though gadgets remain the stars of CES, manufacturers are building on a foundation of hardware innovation with incremental updates, accessories, and apps that connect the gadgets.
