Humanity Program - Oakridge.in. “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” ~ Nelson Mandela We at Oakridge believe in it and our students always take this thought to the next level.

Humanity Program - Oakridge.in

It was an exciting moment to see how our students recently took a great opportunity to participate in the Habitat for Humanity program and built homes for the people in need. When it’s hard for us to even imagine life without shelter, there are people in our world who live in inadequate housing or no house at all. Housing, however, changes everything for a family and children living in poverty. To support such families, over 60 students from Oakridge, one of the top International Schools in Gachibowli joined the program. These Oakridgers visited a remote village called Varthur near Bengaluru to contribute their bit towards the development of society. Not just that, but these compassionate kids also participated actively in refurbishing a Government school campus by painting the building of the school. No wonder, the closets and cupboards, drawers and chests at home, overflowing with toys of various shapes, sizes, colors and functionalities are trying to find breathing spaces. Children’s rooms are full of the so-called Educational toys to boost critical thinking and reasoning abilities among young learners. Children reach home after school, to rush from one activity class to another. In an increasingly competitive world, there’s less time for a child to be a child, in the process of losing out on creative experiences which helps to develop social, emotional, communication and thinking skills.

“I am bored” is the most dreaded statement among young parents. Striking the balance between passion for sports and quest for academic excellence - Oakridge. Sriya Machiraju, a 16-year-old Oakridger, is an ace Golfer.

And, in this short span, Sriya has qualified for RFGC Golf Championship, Malaysia, and clinched the third position at Albatross Inter-school Championship, national-level Golf Tournament. When asked about her meteoric rise in the golfing world that has left everyone spellbound, Sriya, says, “I am often asked how many events I have played in and won; well, the count is low. e-waste campiagn - Best IB School in Hyderabad

Faster networks and newer applications and services delivered at increasingly high speeds, have brought new opportunities to many people in several sectors of the industry of today. At the same time, higher levels of disposable income, urbanization in many developing countries are leading to growing amounts of electrical and electronic equipment, and consequently to ‘e-waste’. “e-waste is a popular, informal name for electronic products nearing the end of their “useful lives.” Computers, Televisions, VCRs, stereos, copiers, mobiles, fax machines, etc. are common electronic products—many of which can be reused, refurbished or recycled”, explains Akash, a grade 12 student from Oakridge International School, Gachibowli.

Are we preparing our students for the future? - Oakridge. Education is no longer about employability.

Are we preparing our students for the future? - Oakridge

It is more about building skill sets and building character. It is also about building knowledge. If we want our children to succeed in the future workplace, we need a strong content-based, skill-building transaction in the classroom–where student agency is the focus. In this process, we need to be careful that we do not leave our empathy and humanity behind. Daily practice to improve self-management and organizational skills - Oakridge. Good working habit helps to lead an organized and balanced life to deal with oneself and the dramatically changing world.

Daily practice to improve self-management and organizational skills - Oakridge

It saves time, improves efficiency and helps us to relieve ourselves from workloads. At Oakridge International School, we believe developing a good working habit is a crucial factor for our achievements and accomplishments. The two important aspects of developing a good working habit are – effort and consistency. While students perform with different abilities in different areas, success or progress is appraised against the best efforts put in by the student. Consistency is the key to success. Someone once said to me, “We have a place for everything, but everything has a place.”- and it is very true. If the start- to – wind – up routine is connected with students’ voice, choice and ownership, then the students take up the accountability as they feel they are the ones who have taken the decision for their learning/progress.

This event accurately captured the problems and gave answers to these problems. Several mega-industry construction giants who wanted to hear our ideas and help us understand that no idea is too small mentored us and helped us refine our ideas to make it more financially and scientifically possible.” Discipline without damage : one effective strategy to get young children to cooperate - Oakridge. We often hear harried parents and teachers grappling with the issue of young children not listening to them.

Discipline without damage : one effective strategy to get young children to cooperate - Oakridge

This is often ascribed to a lack of discipline. Adults want to discipline children and make them comply. So much so, that many a times it becomes a tug of war and leads to more damage than discipline. Finally either the adult gives in or the adult controls and commands. Either way, on the surface of things there is peace but the abrasions are never forgotten: the scars lie deep to resurface at another point. The question that we all seek answers to is, how do we inculcate discipline without damage? The adult approach to discipline often revolves around dismissing or denying feelings.

Strategies for emotional well-being - Oakridge. “Loka smastha sukhino bhavantu” is a Sanskrit chant often recited in Indian schools.

Strategies for emotional well-being - Oakridge

Put simply, it means, may the entire world be happy and peaceful. It germinates from the belief that all of us, the entire world is a huge family and every event is interconnected creating a ripple effect of good or bad across the universe. It debunks the old idea of survival of the fittest and upholds the win-win mindset that covey details in ‘Seven Habits’. Indeed, Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary celebrated this month on 2 October, serves as a powerful reminder of this yogic way of life.

In his autobiography, he speaks of how his spiritual practice of meditation transformed him from a restless, self-seeking youth to a peace-seeking revolutionary. Learning has no limits - Oakridge.in. Students and staff from Oakridge do their bit for water scarcity at Laxmipura village Globally, water scarcity has become a major issue that needs continuous attention. India is facing the worst water crisis in its history, and 21 Indian cities will run out of groundwater by 2020, a new report from the NITI Aayog said, highlighting the need for “urgent and improved” management of water resources.

With nearly 600 million Indians facing high-to-extreme water stress – where more than 40 percent of the annually available surface water is used every year – and about 200,000 people dying every year due to inadequate access to safe water, the situation is likely to worsen as the demand for water will exceed the supply by 2050. This water crisis is so heartbreaking.
