I cashed in some karma chips that I had been hording from earlier this summer (late snow, murderous mosquitoes, gangrenous blisters, AWOL toenails) and was rewarded with a textbook western backpacking trip: perfect weather, great views, no bugs, wildflowers, and camp stories that could make a cowboy cry. At the last minute, a friend's 70-year old father ("Chuck") joined in the fun with 48 pounds of fresh food and 30-year old backpacking gear and got a week-long education on modern fabrics and the glory of the one-pot meal. My backpacking cohort and I are not ultralight backpackers, but we have invested in new equipment that allows us to carry less than 30 pounds each (including food and 2.5 liters of water) for a 6 day trip. After hiking out of the Canyon Creek area we drove to a campground on Trinity Lake.
We did this principally to have hot showers. After breakfast we drove up Coffee Creek Road to the Big Flat trailhead. The 16 miles of gravel road seemed to discourage people as there were very few cars at the TH. Canyon Creek Lakes Trail. It provides at least a sample of most of the sights and activities that make the Trinity Alps such a unique and marvelous place. Thompson Peak, highest of the Alps, soars in snow-tipped splendor above the deep, blue waters of Canyon Creek Lakes in the upper basin. Higher up, in a side pocket of granite, contorted little "El" Lake reflects permanent snowbanks and minarets on the north side of Sawtooth Mountain.

There's a reason this is the most popular part of the Trinity Alps. Did some car camping Friday night after work, on the way down, at one of the campgrounds on the almost-empty reservoir. Thanks to the above average snow year the streams and water falls were gushing, which made for an entirely different trip than my first one in November 2003. For this trip, we left Palo Alto around 5:45 am Friday morning. Made great time on the road and reached Weaverville by 11:30 am. Had lunch at Noelle's Garden Cafe in downtown Weaverville, picked up a Wilderness Permit from the Weaverville Ranger Station and headed to Canyon Creeks Trailhead 12 miles north of Junction City off of 299. In 20 minutes we reached the first stream crossing. Even though the temperature was 75 to 80 degrees F that day, the hike did not feel that hot because the majority of the trail is under the trees which saved us from direct sunlight. Canyon Creek Falls is the biggest falls on this trail.

I dropped my camera a couple weeks ago in Yosemite, and now it has sand in the lens motor. The only photos I have are from my cell phone camera...so bear with me. Left town on Thursday after work, heavy traffic on I-5 for sure. Ninja stealth camped at a closed Eagle Creek Loop campground about 15 miles from the trailhead. Wilderness Sign After immediately crossing Salmon River (which was pretty low), it was pretty straightforward climb through the trees for the first 2.5 miles or so until you reach Caribou Meadow. The trail begins to open up as it soon enters a burned area, where many nice flowers lined the trail. Burned Forest/Flowers Soon you pass Brown's Meadow and the last chance to fill up your water for awhile. Granite Appears Caesar (C) and Thompson Peak (just behind, the highest point in the Trinites) appear across the valley Caesar and Thompson Peaks. Trinity Alps - Bear Lakes 6/21-22/14. There is a well marked off trail route to Little Bear from the granite waterfall area about 1/4 mile from Big Bear. Easy scrambling/off trail to Little Bear and up over the ridge to Big Bear. Wee Bear Lake had super fishing—lots of brookies. While the saddle looking down towards Big Bear had very nice camping sites, the tarns that usually hold water during wetter years held only dead bug water. Little Bear has great campsites.
