Ministry of Truth - Orwell 1984. In George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, the Ministry of Truth is Oceania's propaganda ministry.

Ministry of Truth - Orwell 1984

It is one of the four ministries that govern the nation. As with the other Ministries in the novel, the Ministry of Truth is a misnomer and in reality serves the opposite of its purported namesake: it is responsible for any necessary falsification of historical events. The book describes a willful fooling of posterity using doctored historical archives to show a government-approved version of events. As well as administering truth, the ministry spreads a new language amongst the populace called Newspeak, in which, for example, "truth" is understood to mean statements like 2 + 2 = 5 when the situation warrants.

In Newspeak, the ministry is known as Minitrue. Members of four unions – the University and College Union (UCU), Unite, Unison and the Educational Institute of Scotland – formed picket lines all over the country, opposing a 1% pay rise offer which they say constitutes a 13% real terms cut since 2008. The action follows a strike on 31 October which, according to Unite, “left some campuses deserted”, with “lectures cancelled, libraries shut and deliveries turned away”. But London universities played down that day’s disruption, with University College London claiming only 3.9% of its staff participated. Today’s action forced University of London to shut Senate House Library and caused class cancellations across the city.

Senate House (University of London) Coordinates: Senate House is the administrative centre of the University of London, situated in the heart of Bloomsbury, London between the School of Oriental and African Studies to the east, with the British Museum to the south.

Senate House (University of London)

The main building contains the University of London's Central Academic Bodies and Activities, including the offices of the Vice-Chancellor of the University, the entire collection of the Senate House Library, and eight of the ten research institutes of the School of Advanced Study (SAS). After the First World War the University of London, then based at the Imperial Institute in Kensington was in urgent need of new office and teaching space to allow for its growth and expansion. In 1921, the government bought 11 acres (4.5 ha) of land in Bloomsbury from the Duke of Bedford to provide a new site for the University. However, many within the university were opposed to a move, and, in 1926, the Duke bought back the land.

We can be contacted at londonoccupation@gmail.com and 07754768945 We have taken over the main management corridor and the Vice Chancellor’s office in opposition to the way our university is being run and the way the higher education sector as a whole is controlled. This action is restorative; displacing the undemocratic and unaccountable management with a democratic space for the free pursuit of knowledge, critical enquiry and dissent.

University of London management is behaving in a disgraceful and unaccountable manner, and we have no choice but to take direct action. Roar_News : In case you missed that letter... Dear Protesters. And if one thing has become clear in recent months, this is the first—really the only—impulse of the current government when faced with challenges to their vision for higher education. Police infiltration, surveillance, elected student leaders banned from political activities on campus, the arrest of students for simple acts of expression like chalking slogans on sidewalks, send a clear and constant message. There can be no reasoned discussion on these issues. There is no longer anything to talk about. Certainly, democracy has absolutely nothing to do with it. There was a time—not so very long ago—when the employment of police, let alone riot police, on university grounds was considered shocking and outrageous. Universities are now managed by a swelling class of overpaid executives who spend most of their time figuring out how to weasel more money from corporations.

ULU statement on violent eviction of Senate House occupation

For contact from ULU call 07964791663 Send solidarity to: london.occupation@gmail.com; @SHoccupation Today, over a hundred students occupied the management office of Senate House at the University of London. It was one of the biggest and most widely supported protests that the student movement in London has seen in years. The protests demands centred around the campaign for sick pay, holiday pay and pensions for outsourced workers – 3Cosas – and the threats to close down ULU, the university’s student union. This evening, the University of London colluded once again with police to evict occupiers, in a violent attempt to harass and silence dissent on campus. Hundreds of police descended on the occupation at around 8.30pm and broke into the occupation. Occupations are a legitimate form of dissent. Tonight’s events constitute a significant escalation of the dispute on campuses. Novara Media (Statement from occupation of Senate House)
