Here’s the thing. For pretty much every single bag I make, I follow the same approximate steps. They’re here. However, I did modify that tutorial a little to make this diaper bag similar to the ones my sister-in-law loves (think- adding pleats, a curved top and purse-ish handles). To modify the Teacher Tote tutorial to make a Kate Spade diaper bag knock off- Start with 17″x15″ fabric rectangles (two for the exterior and two for the liners). Follow the Teacher Tote tutorial to put together the exterior and the liner. To add purse handles, sew pleather/vinyl/leather tubes. I still added the option of an over-the-shoulder strap as well. I was suddenly inspired to sew! It was nice feeling that way again...I think maybe the idea of having something to blog about was also giving me a little push. I left off the piping since I didn't have any and added lots of pockets, including one on the outside. I also made my own handles and made them long enough to carry the bag on my shoulder. I didn't have the right sized zipper so I had to refigure the sizing of the side pieces and had to do quite a bit of readjusting to make it fit to the front and back pieces, but made it work in the end. Every piece of fabric except the two large lining pieces has heavy interfacing attached. When it came to attaching the front and back to the side piece I threw the tutorial out the window. Did you notice... it's made from Laminated Chevron Fabric???? Oh- be still my heart love that laminated fabric! I combined it with my new favorite fabric line, Millie's Closet!! Just a note this project is an intermediate/advanced level... mostly because of the laminate and the interior lining. It would be a great one to tackle if you're looking to hone your sewing skills.
