Homebase In Store Shopping Experience. Homebase, one of the UK's leading DIY chains, called upon Retec Interface to help them understand how the in store shopping experience could be enhanced through the use of technology.

The Retec Interface research team soon began work on understanding whether the effects of offering shoppers an extended range of products, or a product finder to help them navigate the store would have a positive benefit and for Homebase, increase sales and improve loyalty. Working in partnership with the store manager's, customers were asked a set of questions regarding their in store experience at different points in their journey, taking in different departments and also at the store exit.

Using the retec.CORE platform as the basis for Tesco development, and a kiosk design customised specifically for the Tesco shopper, the result is an elegant, easy to use, and sturdy kiosk with a range of applications sitting atop a kiosk specific operating system with integrated tools for content and estate management. Tesco is testing out a selection of interactive technologies – including a “magical” augmented reality mirror and a digital mannequin – in three of its UK stores, with the aim of creating a multi-channel shopping experience for customers of its F&F clothing range.

The supermarket chain is running the digital retail pilot in Coventry, Woolwich and Broadstairs, in partnership with Cisco. All three stores are equipped with a digital signage unit, advertising the various clothing lines available through F&F, and a self-service touchscreen kiosk, which customers can use to browse and make purchases using chip-and-pin. In 2011, UK’s leading grocery retailer introduced free Wi-Fi across its ‘Extra’ stores, and last year it launched the very first “interactive store” at Gatwick airport. Tesco Direct, the online service, has had a facelift in 2012, and reports healthy growth. At the moment, three Tesco stores are testing five different pieces of modern technology, to see which shows more potential for wider roll-out. So TechWeekEurope went to take a look at the ‘magic mirrors’, information terminals and digital signage in use at its emporium in Woolwich. Some eight months ago we were invited to a similar trial at John Lewis. Tesco’s F&F clothing range features over 7000 items, but is often overlooked by shoppers looking for something more exciting.

According to Tesco’s head of online development operations Situl Thrakrar, what a modern shopper needs is something “to aid the experience” in the store.
