Fungal microbiome: Whether mice get fatter or thinner depends on the fungi that live in their gut. The Research Brief is a short take about interesting academic work.
The big idea Mice with certain communities of fungi living in their gut gained more weight when eating processed food than mice whose gut microbiomes hosted different communities of fungi, according to our study published March 5 in the journal Communications Biology. Microbiomes are communities of microorganisms. In this study, we explored whether the fungal members of the gut microbiome – called the mycobiome – changed their host’s metabolic reaction to processed food. To do this, we obtained genetically identical mice from four different companies – each with different fungal microbiomes – and then fed the mice either standard mouse food or processed food resembling the typical American diet. Researchers discover previously unknown response within gut microbiota.
The gut microbiome, which is a collection of numerous beneficial bacteria species, is key to our overall well-being and good health.
Recent studies have linked the gut microbiome with several beneficial properties, such as aiding in the development of our immune system and warding off pathogen infections. We have around 10 times more bacteria in our guts than cells in our body1 and it’s this bacteria (or microbes) that make up our microbiome. Most of these microbes live in our large intestine (colon) but every part of our body has microbes living in or on it (even our skin). Each of these separate colonies of microbes around our body are known as microbiota.
The majority of these microbes are beneficial and they help us to digest food, such as vegetables, which we wouldn’t be able to digest without them, provide energy for our metabolism, make essential vitamins and act as the first line of defence against germs. Of course, there’s also some bad bacteria in our microbiome but the good bacteria in our bodies works to stop the bad ones from having ill effects on us. Every day the bacteria in our microbiome looks slightly different as new bacteria enters our body and develops and others leave or die off. Ulcerative colitis. Our gut bacteria is currently a hot topic among researchers and doctors alike.
We are only just starting to understand the relationship between having a balanced microbiome (our collective gut bacteria) and our health. Kefir for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. What is Kefir?

Ulcerative Colitis: New Drug May Help. Recipe for IBD: can we use food to control inflammatory bowel disease? IBD is a group of chronic disorders characterized by relapsing inflammation of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The most common entities are Crohn’s Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC). While CD is characterized by a segmental transmural inflammation and granulomatous lesions of the whole GI tract, inflammation in UC is mostly restricted to the colon and the rectum.
Both incidence and prevalence of IBD are currently increasing worldwide [1]. Although the etiology of IBD has not yet been fully elucidated, more than a hundred genetic risk loci have been identified so far. These genetic studies point toward an important role of the immune system and its interaction with the microbiota in the development of IBD. In this section, we will refresh the knowledge on the intestinal microbiota, how it interacts with the immune system, and furthermore the role of the key cytokines (IL-23, IL-17, IL-22, IL-10), which result from this interaction in the context of IBD. Intestinal microbiota. Viruses in the gut connected to inflammatory bowel disease — The American Microbiome Institute. A new study has shown that the composition of viruses in the gut may play an important role in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). If you’ve been reading the blog for a while, you’ve seen us write about something called the virome. The virome is the collection of viruses in the body and similarly to the microbiome, it may have profound affects on human health.
This study led by scientists at Washington University in St. Louis and published in Cell is the first to correlate a disease with changes in a person’s virome. Gut microbiota studies lead to new understandings of IBD. In inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a set of conditions that includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis (UC), parts of the digestive tract become chronically inflamed. ‘Debilitating’ doesn’t begin to describe IBD at its most intense: during a disease flare, someone who normally leads a busy and active life may have to put everything on hold to stay at home, close to the bathroom, battling pain and nausea. Genes are only one part of how IBD arises. The other parts are less clear, but equally important in the quest to understand how to prevent and treat these conditions. A new report, Gut microbiota and inflammatory bowel disease, published by the Gut Microbiota for Health Experts Exchange platform and edited by Professors Philippe Marteau and Harry Sokol, gives an overview of the new theories on the disordered physiology of IBD.
In addition to the microbiota, two related factors may play a role in inflammatory bowel disease: the immune system and environmental triggers.
