Nlarchitects. ArtA. NL Architects Shortlisted to Design ArtA Cultural Center in Arnhem. Amsterdam-based NL Architects has been shortlisted, alongside three other prestigious teams, to design a new “ArtA” museum and film house for the city of Arnhem. Uniting four main programs – a cinema, art square, museum and park – the “wedge-shaped” structure is designed as an “urban moraine” that cascades towards the city and invites residents to experience the Rhine from an elevated parkway.
This formation grants pedestrians two options for museum access: up the Baroque-inspired rooftop park or through the ground level “Art Square” which serves as a “public intermediary” between the building and city, as well as the museum and film theatre. Sunken below the “Art Square” are the subterranean movie halls which are accessed through a “cinematographic canyon excavated from the square.” As NL describes, “One of the halls seems to ‘escape’ from the base, a bit like a lava lamp, to become a prominent and visible emblem for the cinema as a whole.” Topping the structure is the museum. Sanya Lake Park Super Market Proposal / NL Architects. Housing Corporation VANKE recently asked NL Architects to make a proposal for a Super Market as part of a big resort in Sanya, the southernmost city in China. Renowned for its tropical climate and for being a popular tourist destination, the site of the resort will consist of three clusters of large residential slabs of 21 stories high enveloping semi enclosed gardens.
The public space plays a crucial role in the atmosphere of the area as a whole so a lot of consideration is going into creating a pleasant environment. More images and architects’ description after the break. The landscaping is a key factor to the success; a large park-like corridor will connect the important parts of the masterplan. Within this park, the client intends to create several pavilions with services and commercial functions to activate this landscape. The counter-intuitive strategy in planning supermarkets: some brands actually invest a lot of money in a cheap appearance.
Super Market Sanya Lake Park. SOZAWE / NL Architects. NL Architects have designed a stepped volume for the office of SOZAWE (Welfare Department and Work Agency) in the city of Groningen. The design includes an open marketplace which supports the architects’ intentions of creating an “open, inviting and sustainable place.” This public square allows interaction between the department and its customers, and the terracing condition of the building creates cross relations between floors. Each of the nine office floors open to an individual terrace, allowing workers to enjoy fresh air and take in the view of the city.
