Now with the release this week of eight new mobile enterprise apps in the industrial products and healthcare industries, Apple and IBM have met both their interim schedule and goal to total to some 22 business mobile apps in the IBM MobileFirst portfolio across 10 industries by this quarter. So far, the collaboration between the once bitter rivals seems to be working as planned, which is good not only for the companies themselves but for the far larger issue to advance enterprise mobility.

In February, the collaborators added three new apps–Advisor Alerts, Passenger Care and Dynamic Buy–to go with an earlier app to bring the total number at that point to 14 across eight industries. Apple partners with IBM on new health data analysis

IBM on Monday unveiled Watson Health Cloud, a cloud-based platform that will allow health researchers to not only store and share and patient data but provide access to IBM's data mining and analytics capabilities. IBM's platform, which harnesses the same cognitive computing power that made Watson a household name to millions of "Jeopardy" fans, draws on the vast amounts of consumer health data that can be collected using Apple's ResearchKit and HealthKit, frameworks that help developers create apps that can gather and share medical information about its users.

"Our deep understanding and history in the health care industry will help ensure that doctors and researchers can maximize the insights available through Apple's HealthKit and ResearchKit data," John E. Speaking to The Drum Taylor revealed that IBM has to be extremely careful in the way that it markets Watson, because it wants to focus on how the platform can be truly transformation to people’s lives, rather than the novelty aspect – such as when it beat humans on US game show Jeopardy. “Here is a computer essentially that managed to beat human beings at a very complex game show and so it had this kudos and interest amongst people,” she remarked.

“It’s a great advocate really to get people to think about computing and technology in a different way. “You’ll see us introduce new, Watson capabilities and solutions across the board as we go forward. We talked of bringing together a unique group of people – incredibly talented professionals from across IBM – into a new unit. This included the single largest movement of IBM Research personnel in our history, along with 10 – 12 startups worth of new cognitive technologies that would help define the Watson team. Individuals and core capabilities from our software business would join into the fray. A new approach to engaging the market would be created from talent across IBM’s sales, marketing, services and consulting organizations. First takes from IBM's Software Group's Analyst Insights. Once a year IBM invites to its global analyst meeting in Stamford to brief on the latest of their software products. The event is very valuable to the analysts as the IBM software group is so wide spread, includes so many products – that’s it tough to get all the messages and products aligned throughout the year. With IBM not having a cross product user conference (like Microsoft but unlike e.g. Oracle and SAP), which typically form a natural synch point - the meeting is even more important. The conference was well attended – I estimate over 200 analysts were in the audience – and IBM did a very good job mixing general sessions, round table and mini tent presentations with one to ones and social interactions.

Researchers at IBM, using movement data collected from millions of cell-phone users in Ivory Coast in West Africa, have developed a new model for optimizing an urban transportation system. The IBM model prescribed changes in bus routes around the around Abidjan, the nation’s largest city. These changes—based on people’s movements as discerned from cell-phone records—could, in theory, slash travel times 10 percent. While the results were preliminary, they point to the new ways that urban planners can use cell-phone data to design infrastructure, says Francesco Calabrese, a researcher at IBM’s research lab in Dublin, and a coauthor of a paper on the work.

“This represents a new front with a potentially large impact on improving urban transportation systems,” he says. “People with cell phones can serve as sensors and be the building blocks of development efforts.” Top stories: African Innovation opens in Kenya (with image) · ibmevents.
