Richard Millwood is an assistant professor at Trinity College Dublin, and he also runs Core Education, a nonprofit that helps schools use technology for better learning outcomes. As part of his work for the HoTEL Project (Holistic Approach to Technology Enhanced Learning), Millwood created this guide to learning theories. What does an instructional designer do? In the past few months, I’ve been asked by a number of different people what an instructional designer does and how to get into the field.
I love instructional design because it is a field where I am constantly learning and I have a great variety in what I do. I use so many different skills—writing, web design, graphics, collaboration, planning, plus of course how people learn. Since this question has come up more than once, I thought it would be useful to collect all the information I have emailed people privately and post it here.

The beauty of a tool like Google Sheets is that students now have a place to explore integer relationships and discover these patterns on their own. In a previous post, I showed how Sheets can be used to help students explore the patterns produced by integer addition. By comparison, the rules for multiplication and divisions (same signs = positive, different signs = negative) are relatively straightforward. In this Sheet, students input positive and negative factors into the multiplication rows first, then answer the questions using the dropdowns. These are color-coded to make the patterns easy to recognize. The division sheet will be populated with the related multiplication sentence from the first sheet.

I have probably reviewed a little over 200 apps in the last couple of years but when I first started reviewing apps there were not many guidelines and checklists as is the case now. With the help of carefully crafted rubrics like the ones below, teachers can now follow a set of guidelines to select the apps that can work for them in their teaching. Parents too can use these checklists to sift through the piles and handpick the ones to give their kids.

Young Paul LeBlanc, president of Southern New Hampshire University, has become a leading proponent of competency-based education, a way to award degrees based on testing and portfolios rather than "seat-time" in a traditional course.
