When South Africa Banned Pink Floyd's The Wall After Students Chanted "We Don't Need No Education" to Protest the Apartheid School System (1980)

Such was the case, for a time, in South Africa, the country that coined the term when it put its version of racial segregation in place in 1948. The Apartheid system finally collapsed in 1991, decades after its counterpart in the U.S. —its undoing the accumulated weight of global condemnation, UN sanction, boycotts, and growing pressure from citizens in wealthy countries. An Animated Introduction to Noam Chomsky's Manufacturing Consent and How the Media Creates the Illusion of Democracy. For nearly as many years as he’s occupied the public eye, famed linguist and anarchist philosopher Noam Chomsky has made claims that might have discredited other academics.

An Animated Introduction to Noam Chomsky's Manufacturing Consent and How the Media Creates the Illusion of Democracy

Perhaps his many books, articles, lectures, interviews, etc. carry such weight because of his “famed linguist” status and his longtime tenure at MIT. But there’s more to his longevity as a respected critic of U.S. state power. His voice also carries significant authority because he substantiates his arguments with erudite, granular analyses of economic theory, history, and political philosophy. We’ve seen him do exactly this in his fierce opposition to the Vietnam War at the beginning of his activist career, and in his critiques of proxy wars, imperialistic repression, and corporate resource grabs in Latin America and Southeast Asia in decades since. An Animated Introduction to Noam Chomsky's Groundbreaking Linguistic Theories. Most people who know Noam Chomsky know him equally as a giant in academic linguistics and a longtime leftist dissident and political commentator.

Only a committed few, however, read much of his work in either—or both—fields. He is one of those thinkers whose major concepts enter the discourse unmoored from their original context. Phrases like “universal grammar” and “manufactured consent” tend to pop up in all kinds of places without reference to Chomsky’s meanings. If you simply haven’t got the time to read Chomsky (and let’s face it, there’s a lot going on in the world these days), you might familiarize yourself with his media theory in an amusing video here. Though hardly a novel sentiment, this nevertheless makes for a highly suitable entrée into a video essay on Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks. Its creator is gallerist and Youtuber James Payne, whose channel Great Art Explained has already taken on the likes of Leonardo’s Mona Lisa, Michelangelo’s David, Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Diptych, and Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights. Collaborative Learning Spaces: Classrooms That Connect to the World

As citizens of the world, students in today's classrooms seek global contexts for learning. Opportunities for networked and international collaborations are bringing both the world to classrooms and classrooms to the world. With a focus on international standards of instruction, globally-minded programs inspire students to be curious through investigation and reflective in analysis of thought. These pathways lead to the development of cultural literacy by allowing students to examine issues of global significance through interconnected sharing of experience and exchange of ideas. Collaborative learning spaces empower students to work with each other and with students in classrooms of the world to assume multiple perspectives, explore alternative solutions, and thoughtfully solve problems. Understanding Cultural Literacy in the Classroom – Explorations in Literacy.

It has always been very important to me that students feel like they are understood and accepted in the classroom.

Understanding Cultural Literacy in the Classroom – Explorations in Literacy

They should feel like the teacher not only cares about them, but understands where they come from. It has recently become apparent to me that not many teachers take the time to discover the backgrounds of their students. They don’t know their culture or what their home life entails, and I think it’s really important to know such things, especially as en educator. Mundane science fiction is a subgenre of hard science fiction which is characterized by its setting on Earth or within the solar system, and a lack of interstellar travel, intergalactic travel or human contact with extraterrestrials.[1] History[edit] The Mundane science fiction movement, inspired by an idea of Julian Todd, was founded in 2004 during the Clarion workshop by novelist Geoff Ryman among others.[2][3] The beliefs of the movement were later codified as the Mundane Manifesto.[4] Ryman has contrasted mundane science fiction with most science fiction through the desire of teenagers to leave their parents' homes.[5] Ryman sees too much of regular science fiction being based on an "adolescent desire to run away from our world".

However, Ryman notes that humans are not truly considered grown-up until they "create a new home of their own", which is what mundane science fiction aims to do.[5] Geoff Ryman interviewed - infinity plus non-fiction. Kit Reed and Geoff Ryman met in cyberspace for two real-time conversations in July, 2004. Unlike email interviews, real-time encounters are spontaneous. The questions and answers flow as fast as Reed and Ryman can type. They talked on Wesleyan University's StoryMOO for two hours.

That continues today with EQUALITY, Nike’s ongoing effort to encourage people to take the fairness and respect they see in sport and translate them off the field. The EQUALITY initiative is centered on using the power of sport to inspire people to take action in their communities, with Nike leading by example with its partnerships with world-class organizations dedicated to advancing this work. Supporting these values, EQUALITY delivers on the brand’s ongoing partnership with MENTOR (the leading national organization in ensuring quality youth mentoring relationships and connecting volunteers to opportunities in their communities) and PeacePlayers International (a global organization focused on bridging divides in communities by developing youth leaders, building relationships and changing perceptions) to drive change within communities.

Aristotle House in Oxford is not as grand as it sounds. A commercial block built by the canal in the 1960s, it is no longer fit for paying tenants, so its owner, Wadham College, allows a group of social enterprises to stay there, like official squatters.

And there’s evidence of their enterprise everywhere outside, from the drop-box for returning poetry books, to the compost heaps built from old pallets, and the young Victoria plum tree blossoming in a pot by the door. Inside, for those who know about it, is the Oxford library of things. It sounds like the setting for a Philip Pullman novel, and represents a vision of humanity that’s nearly as fantastical – an idea so simple and so brilliant that, the first time you hear it, you wonder why it hasn’t conquered the world already.
