These subjects are structured as a ladder. Each new step adds a level of difficulty and has clear goals and knowledge criteria. It allows students to study at their own pace and thoroughly learn a concept before they proceed to the next step.In themes, several subjects are coordinated with each other to show students the context of a phenomenon, and give them the ability to see context and patterns. For example, a theme course called “A Star” covers history, religion, food technology, geography, art, drama, music and dance. In history, students study the qualities of people who earned star status during different historical periods.

Teaching Peace in Elementary School

Now, a growing number of educators are trying to bolster emotional competency not on college campuses, but where they believe it will have the greatest impact: in elementary schools. In many communities, elementary teachers, guidance counselors and administrators are embracing what is known as social and emotional learning, or S.E.L., a process through which people become more aware of their feelings and learn to relate more peacefully to others. 10 Tips For Launching An Inquiry-Based Classroom. Transforming teaching practices is a long, slow road. But increasingly schools and teachers experiencing success are sharing their ideas online and in-person. The educators that make up the school community have spent nearly half that time sharing best practices through a school-run conference each year and more recently by opening a second school in Philadelphia. In San Francisco, preschoolers can now learn STEM with 3D printing and laser cutters — Quartz. San Francisco A few weeks ago, at the Bay Area Discovery Museum (BADM) near San Francisco, 5-year-old Jack Stabenow climbed a step stool to peer into a machine that cuts cardboard with a high-powered laser. The red beam precisely followed a squiggly building design that Jack had just finger-drawn on a tablet computer. Jack’s goal was to make a building that could stand up to the wind of a nearby table fan. With his cardboard cut, Jack hurried to the assembly area where about two dozen other kids his age labored over teetering, but well-taped, creations. If these first attempts toppled in the breeze, that was to be expected. Integrating Engineering Design and Challenge-Based Learning in STEM.
