It has declared them ‘State Land', leaving way for more settlements considered illegal under international law. On numerous occasions, the United Nations declared that Israel's construction of settlements constitutes a violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention (relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War). Met die vergoeilijking komt standaard een vast setje verwijten vermomd als argumenten: waarom maken die Palestina-vrienden zich niet druk om Syrië of Egypte (of welk ander conflictgebied dan ook). Uiteraard is dit bedoeld om de betrokkenheid bij de Palestijnen te diskwalificeren en de Palestina-sympathisanten voor antisemieten uit te kunnen maken. Wie zich uitspreekt tegen het geweld is verdacht als het om het geweld van Israël tegen de Palestijnen gaat, maar tegelijk willen de Vrienden van Israël dat je je druk maakt om elke andere brandhaard in de wereld. Here’s what you need to know about these talking points and more. Israel has killed upwards of 1500 Palestinians in the past three weeks. The UN estimates that more than 74 percent of those killed are civilians. That is to be expected in a population of 1.8 million where the number of Hamas members is approximately 15,000. Israel does not deny that it killed those Palestinians using modern aerial technology and precise weaponry courtesy of the world’s only superpower. In fact, it does not even deny that they are civilians. Israel’s propaganda machine, however, insists that these Palestinians wanted to die (“culture of martyrdom”), staged their own death (“telegenically dead”) or were the tragic victims of Hamas’s use of civilian infrastructure for military purposes (“human shielding”).

Elke overeenkomst die niet voorziet in een opheffing van de blokkade van Gaza is een recept voor toekomstig bloedvergieten. Wat is het einddoel van Israël? Rest bovendien de vraag wat de echte intenties van Israël zijn. Het keer op keer naar voren schuiven van nieuwe eisen doet vermoeden dat Israël de operatie nog wel even wil rekken. Gaza, Palestina, Hamas: Quo Vadis? (deel I) Voor het begrijpen van een conflict tussen twee partijen is het nodig de beweegredenen en achtergrond van beide partijen te kennen. De Mujamma was een sociale beweging die pleitte voor een terugkeer naar het “pad van de Islam” als weg naar bevrijding. Hamas is echter meer dan dat. Twee maten en twee gewichten. Sinds de operatie in Libanon van 2006 sneuvelden niet meer zoveel Israëlische soldaten (43). De Gazastrook wordt van alle kanten bestookt. Steeds vaker gebruikt het daarbij dodelijke vuurwapens. Israël plaatst zijn jeugd in situaties waarin zij brutaal moeten optreden tegen een burgerbevolking die zich verzet tegen diefstal van gronden en levensonderhoud. Palestijnse eenheidsregering Sinds de politiek en fysieke levenslijn naar Egypte werd afgesloten, was Hamas in de Gazastrook verzwakt en geïsoleerd geraakt.
