My Life as a Middle School English Teacher. Using Social Media to Teach Visual Literacy in the 21st-Century Classroom. Increasingly, educators are acknowledging and welcoming the relative advantages of social media into the teaching and learning process.
From creating school Facebook pages to connecting students with experts via Twitter, social media has taken root as a legitimate classroom learning and communication tool. The highly linguistic nature of social media allows us to create and consume ideas and information unlike ever before. Much attention has been given to composing an articulate blog post and condensing our messages to 140 characters or less. However, effective use of this 21st century technology requires that we not only become proficient in textual communication, but also in our ability to express ourselves and interpret others' ideas through visual literacy. Why Visual Literacy Matters Visual literacy is the ability to: Process and make meaning of information presented in an image.
Mrs.Wideen's Blog. Resilience Café. Self-regulation technique helps students focus in class. At Cindrich elementary school in Surrey, B.C., 10-year-old boys are putting themselves to bed earlier, an enthusiastic girl in Grade 6 takes herself for a run when she’s feeling hyper, and a diminutive boy who is still learning English tells his teacher he will do better work if he sits on a special cushion.
It is all part of self-regulation, a philosophy of education that is moving into public schools in British Columbia. The Surrey School district is the largest of six districts in B.C. that has taken it on, almost out of self-defence. I decided to reincarnate that post because many of the videos are no longer on the internet, some of the sites have gone under, and I have always wanted to get to an even 100. Videos play an important role in my class (well not so much this year, because of something I can’t write about here, but they will continue again next year They serve as much more than a time filler (ok maybe sometimes), they are played for more than just cheap laughs (although I am a big fan of cheap laughs), and they all usually have some point to them (maybe the snoring dog video has no point). Yes conversations can bond people, yes sharing personal stories can create a common bond between people…but so can video if used carefully and purposely. Project-Based Learning. Good news for teens: The CDC says they should start school later. It's quite the irony.
When kids are babies and toddlers and have absolutely nowhere to be, they won't sleep in late to save their (or, more accurately, their parents') lives. By the age that they'd rather walk on glass than get up at 6 a.m., they have to get up early to go to school. Life can be so unfair. Well, it turns out that waking up a sleeping teenager isn't just miserable for parents — it's not great for kids either. According to the research, kids go to school too early. Image by Thinkstock.
