The Old Pretender and Bonnie Prince Charlie,The Young Pretender and the Jacobite Rebellion. The Two Pretenders of the title were James Edward Stuart, known as the Old Pretender, and his son Charles Edward Stuart, the Young Pretender.
Both were determined to take their place - in their opinion, their rightful place - on the British throne. Both Pretenders, in their own way, were a bit of a disaster. They relied on their undoubted popularity with the Scots, but were sadly lacking when it came to organisation or common sense! James VIII 'The Old Pretender' James Francis Edward, Prince of Wales (the Chevalier de St George, "The King Over the Water", "The Old Pretender" or "The Old Chevalier"; 10 June 1688 – 1 January 1766) was the English son of the soon-to-be-deposed James II of England (James VII of Scotland).
As such, he claimed the English, Scottish and Irish thrones (as James III of England and Ireland and James VIII of Scotland) from the death of his father in 1701, when he was recognised as king of England, Scotland and Ireland by his cousin Louis XIV of France. Following his death in 1766 he was succeeded by his son Charles Edward Stuart in the Jacobite Succession. Had his father not been deposed, there would have been only two monarchs during his lifetime; his father and himself.
In reality there were six; the last three Stuarts and the first three Hanoverians. Birth and childhood[edit] James III and VIII. James Francis Edward Stuart was born June 10 (Old Style), June 20 (New Style), 1688, at St.

From his birth James bore the titles of "Prince of England, Scotland, France, and Ireland, Duke of Cornwall and Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Lord of the Isles, and Great Steward of Scotland". At his birth he was also named "Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester", although he seems not to have been formally so created. James Francis Edward Stuart Feature Page on Undiscovered Scotland. Pretender Profile: King James VIII & III. Ordinarily the birth of an heir to the throne is an occasion of great joy; the hope of stability and the future of a dynasty.
However, the birth of Prince James Edward Francis Stuart, first son King James II of Britain and Queen Mary of Modena, brought about war, upheaval and the effective fall of a dynasty that had reigned in Britain since 1371. The prince, who would become known as “The Old Chevalier” and “The Old Pretender” was born at St James Palace on June 10, 1688 and was soon thereafter baptized into the Roman Catholic Church of his parents and this was the “problem” with the newborn prince.
He represented the potential of a Catholic British dynasty and this was something that those with power in the country were not willing to tolerate. First, his legitimacy was called into question and the King even ordered a formal investigation to remove all doubt but it was all rather pointless.
