Moira Anderson. Moira Anderson, OBE (born 5 June 1938, Kirkintilloch, East Dunbartonshire) is a Scottish singer. Life and career[edit] Following an education at Lenzie Academy,[1] Anderson quickly established herself at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow before getting her big break in the media after a successful audition at the BBC.[2] She received an OBE in July 1970.[6] In 2010, she sang at the funeral of Sir Norman Wisdom. A popular singer with a beautiful soprano voice, Moira Anderson studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music, learning to play several instruments. While still in her teens, she had her first break in an Andy Stewart show at the Gaiety Theatre in Ayr, which lead to feature billing in the following Popplewell Gaiety winter production, and further work on the variety circuit.
She reached a wider audience after appearing on the popular television programme The White Heather Club, beginning in 1960. Shortly afterwards she was given her own series, and also appeared in popular programmes such as Eric Robinson’s Melodies, at the London Palladium in Royal Variety Performances, and numerous other theatres throughout the land. Her recordings have consisted mainly of popular standards and light opera, notably those of Gilbert And Sullivan, but the songs of her homeland remain her real forte.

As a child, Moira sang and broadcast all over Great Britain with the famous Kirkintilloch Junior Choir. She won many awards at Music Festivals - both as a singer and pianist, and it was, therefore, no surprise that on leaving school she went on to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music in Glasgow, where she was a distinguished student. After graduating, she taught in schools in Ayrshire until a successful BBC audition changed the course of her career.
Moira was offered her own BBC radio programme called "Can't Help Singing", which she presented and sang with guests from the world of opera and stage musicals. This led to appearances on the hugely popular TV show "The White Heather Club" hosted by Andy Stewart (the only showcase for young singers coming out of Scotland). HAPPY birthday Kirkintilloch – that was the message from a Scottish singing sensation as she helped the burgh celebrate its 800th anniversary. Moira Anderson introduced Kirkintilloch Male Voice Choir at the G66+ Live festival on Friday evening. Moira said: “It’s lovely to be invited back to my home town, which I have never forgotten. “It’s a privilege and it is also nice to remember my roots and the people that set me off on a career that has been so wonderful.” The former Lenzie Academy pupil started singing in a group called the Robins before joining Kirkintilloch Junior Choir, where she got the chance to appear on a TV show with Walt Disney and work with a variety of top musicians including Sir George Martin, the legendary Beatles producer. The talented singer became a household name in the 1960s and 70s through her hit shows ‘Can’t Help Singing’, ‘Moira Anderson Sings’, ‘World of Music’ and ‘Stars on Sunday’.
