Peterhead. Coordinates : Peterhead ( listen ; Scottish Gaelic : Ceann Phàdraig , [ 3 ] Scots : Peterheid listen ) [ 4 ] is a town in Aberdeenshire , Scotland . It is Aberdeenshire's biggest settlement (the city of Aberdeen itself not being a part of the district), with a population of 17,947 at the 2001 Census [ 5 ] and estimated to have fallen to 17,330 by 2006. [ 2 ] Peterhead sits at the easternmost point in mainland Scotland.

It is often referred to as The Blue Toon and people who were born there as Blue Tooners . More correctly they are called Bloomogganners , supposedly from the blue worsted stockings that the fishermen originally wore. History [ edit ] Peterhead was founded by fishermen and was developed as a planned settlement. In recent times, the town has suffered from several high profile company closures and is facing a number of pressures, including Common Fisheries Policy reforms. Until April 2005, the Royal Air Force station RAF Buchan was located near the town. Education [ edit ] Peterhead Feature Page on Undiscovered Scotland. Peterhead has the distinction of being the most easterly point in mainland Scotland, though nearby Boddam runs it close.

Much of the town is built on an east-pointing peninsula defined by the narrow estuary of the River Ugie to the north and Peterhead Bay to the south. Its setting and location have helped ensure that the story of Peterhead over the intervening four centuries has been greatly influenced by the sea. The town was founded by George Keith, the 5th Earl Marischal and his brother Robert from 1587.

At the time the total population numbered around 50, most of whom lived in a fishing village on the island of Keith Inch, which today forms the easternmost part of the town, beyond the harbours. Much of the early port activity took place in the sheltered channel between the mainland and Keith Inch, and in 1739 a causeway was built connecting the island to the mainland. From the end of the 1700s, Peterhead became established as a fashionable resort and spa town.

HMP Peterhead is a prison in the town of Peterhead in Aberdeenshire , Scotland . History [ edit ] Peterhead Convict Prison was built around 1888. It was designed to hold 208 prisoners and to be Scotland's only convict prison. [ 1 ] Occupancy averaged at around 350 however, until peaking at 455 in 1911. [ 1 ] Additional buildings were completed in 1909, 1960 and 1962, bringing capacity up to 362. [ 1 ] According to the Scottish Prison Service , the prison can, at this time, accommodate up to 142 prisoners. [ 2 ] Until the opening of Peterhead Convict Prison, Scots convicts were transported to England to serve their sentences. The first convicts were received in August 1888. Peterhead supplied the labour force to work in Stirlinghill Quarry and in the Admiralty Yard attached to the prison.

The Admiralty project was unique in Scotland as it was served by the only state-owned passenger-carrying railway in its day. HMP Peterhead is now a specialist centre for sex offenders. Catto Long Barrow is an extensive prehistoric stone structure with remnants of seven stone tombs. The site has yielded archaeological recovery of stone axes and its vicinity is replete with tumuli, hoards of worked flint and ancient battleground remains. Situated on locally high open ground, the site offers expansive views in all directions. The site has been suggested in the literature as a likely location of a major battle with invading Danes. GEOMETRY. I measured the length of this ancient monument at 49 metres, one metre longer than published on the Aberdeen Council website.

Aside from the pits noted above and the necessarily uneven texture necessitated by the stone sizes themselves, the top of the cairn is a remarkably large expanse of relatively level surface, contrasted with the more conical or mounded shapes of many other large cairns of this region.
