History[edit] Saint Margaret of Scotland (c. 1045 – 16 November 1093) was an English princess of the House of Wessex, the sister of Edgar Ætheling. Margaret and her family fled to Scotland following the Norman conquest of England of 1066. Around 1070 Margaret married Malcolm III of Scotland.

St Margaret’s Chapel is the oldest building within the Castle walls and sits on the highest point of the Castle Rock. It was built in the early 12th century during the reign of King David I as a private chapel for the royal family and dedicated to his mother St Margaret of Scotland who died at Edinburgh Castle in 1093. Margaret was canonised a saint in 1250 in recognition of her personal holiness, fidelity to the Church, work for religious reform and charity.

St Margaret’s Chapel is tall but very small and unpretentious in design and was rediscovered in 1845 after being used for many years as a store for gun powder. It has five small stained glass windows and has just enough space to hold about twenty-six people. It is still used for weddings and baptisms. Map Data Map data ©2013 Google Map Satellite. If someone had asked me what was the oldest building in Edinburgh, I would have thought vaguely of the Old Town, the dark houses along the Royal Mile, or Holyrood Abbey.

As for Edinburgh Castle, most of the visible structure dates from the 16th Century, since it was largely destroyed following the ‘Lang Siege’ in 1573, which culminated in a massive cannon bombardment by English troops. When we visited Edinburgh Castle a couple of weeks ago, I was therefore surprised to find that St Margaret’s Chapel, a tiny rectangular building perched on a lump of black volcanic rock within the castle walls, is actually the oldest building in Edinburgh. Traditionally, it was believed that St Margaret – formerly Queen Margaret, the wife of Malcolm III of Scotland, and mother of David I – worshipped at the chapel. However, recent research has shown that the chapel was probably built by David I in 1130 and dedicated to his mother, who died at Edinburgh Castle in 1093.
