Now you see it, now you don't: what optical illusions tell us about our brains. Maurits Escher: where do the staircases lead?
The human brain is a network of about 20 billion neurons – nerve cells – linked by several trillion connections. Not to mention glial cells, which scientists used to think were inactive scaffolding, but increasingly view as an essential part of how the brain works. Our brains give us movement, language, senses, memories, consciousness and personality. We know a lot more about the brain than we used to, but it still seems far too complicated for human understanding.
Fortunately, the brain contains many small networks of neurons that carry out some specific function: vision, hearing, movement. Many of these simple networks occur in the visual system. Although we get a strong impression that what we are seeing is “out there” in front of us, what determines that perception resides inside our own heads. Probing the brain’s detailed activity is difficult. The visual system can “go wrong” in several interesting ways. Is That Dress White and Gold or Blue and Black? The Brain - Diagram and Explanation. Mindfulness is close to taking on cult status in the business world.
But as with any rapidly growing movement—regardless of its potential benefits—there is good reason here for caution. Championed for many years by pioneering researchers such as Ellen Langer and Jon Kabat-Zinn, mindfulness is a mental orientation and set of strategies for focusing one’s mind on here-and-now experiences, such as abdominal muscle movements during respiration or chirping of birds outside one’s window. It is rooted in ancient Eastern philosophies, such as Taoism and Buddhism. Contemporary empirical research demonstrates its benefits for reducing anxiety and mental stress. A recent study suggested that it might cut the risk of stroke and heart attack as well. Mindful meditation and other related practices are now widely accepted. What A Raisin Can Teach You About Mindfulness Practice. Happy employees are healthier (and cheaper) Employees who are happy at work not only perform better, but also cost less.
That's the conclusion of a six-year study conducted by health insurance company Humana and the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business. The insurer studied not only its 42,000 employees, but also their impact on patients at its more than 320 medical centers and 270 worksite medical facilities. The results of that research informed the design of the Humana Integrated Total Wellbeing platform, a new product that the company is currently rolling out to employers.
It's good timing for such a product, as businesses are becoming more interested in employee wellbeing as a way to boost everything from retention rates to productivity. Perhaps more importantly, the US Affordable Care Act is putting a major focus on prevention, a first for the US healthcare system. For Humana, the economic value of employee happiness starts with a simple equation: happy nurses keep patients healthier.

Scientists are getting close to proving what yogis have held to be true for centuries -- yoga and meditation can ward off stress and disease. John Denninger, a psychiatrist at Harvard Medical School, is leading a five-year study on how the ancient practices affect genes and brain activity in the chronically stressed.
His latest work follows a study he and others published earlier this year showing how so-called mind-body techniques can switch on and off some genes linked to stress and immune function. While hundreds of studies have been conducted on the mental health benefits of yoga and meditation, they have tended to rely on blunt tools like participant questionnaires, as well as heart rate and blood pressure monitoring. Only recently have neuro-imaging and genomics technology used in Denninger’s latest studies allowed scientists to measure physiological changes in greater detail. Full Movie (The MindFulness Movie) The 3 Most Important Questions. Learn how to meditate and enjoy the benefits! Chakras on Subtle Body and meditation. Within every human being there is a subtle body of three energy channels (nadis) and seven energy centres (chakras). At the root of this system lies a creative, protective and nurturing power which is a dormant, maternal energy (Kundalini). When this power is awakened within us, it rises spontaneously through the spinal column, passes through each of the chakras and emits from the fontanelle bone area on top of the head. This process is referred to as Enlightenment (Self-realization). This energy can actually be felt on top of the head and on the palms of the hands. Any imbalances in the subtle system can be felt on various parts of each hand. There are 7 major chakras within our subtle body: Mooladhara, Swadisthana, Nabhi (Manipura), Hearth (Anahata), Vishuddhi, Agnya, Sahasrara Click for larger view!
