Dragonflies, Butterflies & Mythology. An Exploration of Modern Monsters. Ancient Monsters. Numerous documents from antiquity tell of monstrous people living at the edge of the known world.

Ancient Monsters

In the first century A.D., Pliny the Elder described extraordinary races of humans living in India and Ethiopia: these included mouthless hairy creatures called Astomi, who had no need of food or drink; men with dog’s heads; and one-legged creatures who could hop at incredible speed and use their giant feet as umbrellas to protect them from the sun.

Pliny was himself repeating ancient authorities, and his account of these marvellous races was in turn influential throughout the Middle Ages, during which antique monster lore became part of a Christian framework. For Christians, the monstrous races tested not only their credulity, but also their ethics. Monstrous illustrations Interest in monstrous races endured through the Middle Ages. Particle beams have now travelled in both directions, inside parallel pipes, at a whisker below the speed of light. Actual collisions will not begin for at least another month, but they will take place with nearly double the energy the LHC reached during its first run. The Mysterious Connection Between Sirius and Human History

Esoteric teachings of all ages have invariably attributed to Sirius a special status and the star’s importance in occult symbolism is an attestation of that fact. What makes Sirius so special? Is it simply due to the fact that it is the brightest star in the sky? Or is it also because humanity has an ancient, mysterious connection with it? This article looks at the importance of Sirius throughout History and secret societies and will describe the symbolism surrounding it.

Sirius is located in the constellation Canis Major – also known as the Big Dog – and is therefore known as the “dog star”. Artifacts of ancient civilizations have revealed that Sirius was of a great importance in astronomy, mythology and occultism. In Ancient Civilizations. Cuchulain of Muirthemne Index. The Celtic method of single combat in battle situations Although a large army of men and women set out to do battle, combat was primarily undertaken on a one to one basis. Warriors were chosen from each side who would engage in combat with each other. The outcome would determine which side had won or lost.

This was seen to be preferable to all out combat in which many lives were lost regardless of whoever was ultimately victorious. It was considered the height of barbarism to waste human life needlessly when heroic champions were an integral part of Celtic culture and had thus been specifically trained in the warrior arts - it was the champions role to fight on behalf of many people rather than just themselves. Colloquium: Magic and Intellectual History 5 March 2015, University of York This symposium will explore the place of magic in the intellectual culture of early modern England and Europe. It will focus on how magic was perceived and understood in philosophical, religious and scientific thought, and the ambivalence that surrounded it as topics of scholarship.

To mark the 200th year since the Brothers Grimm first published their Kinder-und Hausmärchen, Jack Zipes explores the importance of this neglected first edition and what it tells us about the motives and passions of the two folklorist brothers. The greatest irony of the numerous world-wide celebrations held this year to honor the 200th anniversary of the first edition of the Grimms’ Kinder-und Hausmärchen, published in two volumes in 1812 and 1815, involves the discovery that most people really don’t know the original Grimms’ tales or much about their lives. That is, most people have no clue that the Grimms’ first edition of 1812/15 is totally unlike the final or so-called definitive edition of 1857, that they published seven different editions from 1812 to 1857, and that they made vast changes in the contents and style of their collections and also altered their concept of folk and fairy tales in the process.

'Fairy control' to halt tiny doors in Somerset woods. 3 March 2015Last updated at 21:06 ET "Fairy control" has had to be brought in at a woods in Somerset to curb the "profusion of elfin construction". Hundreds of fairy doors have been attached to the bases of trees in Wayford Woods, Crewkerne. It is claimed the doors have been installed by local people so children can "leave messages for the fairies". But trustee Steven Acreman said: "We've got little doors everywhere.

We're not anti-fairies but it's in danger of getting out of control. " Originally an extension of nearby Wayford Manor Gardens, the 29 acres of woodland boasts a stream, meadow and ornamental lake. Set up as a charitable trust in the 1990s, it wasn't until the beginning of the millennium that the first fairy moved into the woods and installed a "little door" in the roots of a tree.

"It fitted perfectly, it had a little turned handle and inside was a bed. "But then another door appeared and now it's gathered momentum. " Folklore.
