One thing I love to do with my kids is to browse YouTube for fun educational songs and videos that we can watch together.

I have found so many amazing picture books on YouTube. Most are animated and set to music making the stories come to life. SO many of our favorite stories are read and told in a fun way on there. I made a great big list of them for you to check out. Pin Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst The Animal Boogie, Barefoot Books Are You My Mother? Up, Up, Up! SKPS Elementary Language Arts - HOME. Luckeyfrog's Lilypad: The Perfect Book to Teach Asking Questions! Okay, I have a new favorite reading lesson-- my asking questions lesson! When I got a chance to work with Scholastic last spring, they gave us a bag of swag that any teacher would love, and it included the book This Is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen, which is perfect for teaching a reading lesson about asking questions! (I’ve linked it to Amazon here, but I also highly recommend finding it through Scholastic Reading Club :) On my CRAFT board, we list "Ask questions before, during, and after reading" as a reading comprehension skill (although some of my kids think it belongs under Response to Text, so we concluded that it could go as either!).

This is a really important skill for some of my struggling readers, because some of them never question what they read. They are just reading to get it over with! (oops- took this picture before we added it!) Asking questions before reading gives them a purpose for reading and gets them engaged. Pinterest. Video Shorts Links. Gale Training - Gale. So-Called "Digital Natives" Not Media Savvy, New Study Shows. “In Google we trust.” That may very well be the motto of today’s young online users, a demographic group often dubbed the “digital natives” due their apparent tech-savvy.

Having been born into a world where personal computers were not a revolution, but merely existed alongside air conditioning, microwaves and other appliances, there has been (a perhaps misguided) perception that the young are more digitally in-tune with the ways of the Web than others. That may not be true, as it turns out. A new study coming out of Northwestern University, discovered that college students have a decided lack of Web savvy, especially when it comes to search engines and the ability to determine the credibility of search results.

Apparently, the students favor search engine rankings above all other factors. The only thing that matters is that something is the top search result, not that it’s legit. “I Googled It” During the study, one of the researchers asked a study participant, “What is this website?” Why Use a Database? Subscription Databases » Why Use a Database? Why Use a Database? What is a subscription database anyway? And why should I use one? A database is simply an organized collection of related information. Our school district subscribes to many databases and we strongly encourage students to make use of them. Trustworthy - published by reputable companies Age appropriate Searchable Updated regularly Free of advertisements Unbiased May contain information not available on the free Internet, including primary source documentsMay offer helpful features such as read-aloud, reading levels, language translation, word definitions, pre-formatted citations and more.

Meet Your Learners Where They Are: Virtualizing the School Library As author Brenda Boyer notes, the proliferation of BYOD, 1:1 device programs, and blended and online learning opportunities for students makes it critical for school libraries to meet the challenge of providing services, resources, and instruction in virtual environments.

To that end, Boyer lays out a comprehensive road map to building and maintaining that virtual environment. Just like with the younger grades, when October begins, I start getting into the more "meatier" lessons with 3rd-5th grade as well. These lessons are often taught during one or two library lessons, but will also carry on throughout the entire year. The first of these "meatier" lessons is on the concept of Fiction and Non-Fiction books.

My goal in these lessons is to get the students to understand that if they can figure out what type of book they are reading, they can then get their brain focused on the proper way to "read" that type of book to get the most out of it. I combined the use of a poster and a powerpoint presentation that I created, and had them both up on the board as we began. The first thing I did was to ask the students to close their eyes and pretend that all the books in the library were floating above them. After the immediate pretend screams of horror (don't ya just love kids!) Next week, we will focus on the Non-Fiction section.
