Boost Literacy Learning with Podcasts Kids Love

Podcasts have gained popularity with all ages and offer endless topics, genres, and subject areas. Students in the intermediate grades (4-6) have eagerly embraced the podcast as a way to engage in a good story. Much like tuning in to radio programs of the 1930s-40s, students listen intently as their imagination hooks them into a story – in the classroom as well as at home. Podcasts offer a great way to enhance language arts. Listening comprehension is important to a student’s overall understanding.

Listening helps students to authentically make inferences and predictions from hearing the dialogue between characters and podcast presenters. As a reader, a student may demonstrate the ability to decode words, but some may not understand what they’ve read or make connections to help create pathways to comprehension. The two websites I go to for podcasts are Gen-Z Media and Kidslisten.org. How podcasts work in class Whole class: P.widencdn. 2021 National Book Festival Presents Series Opens With “Giants of Racial Justice”

On Thursday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. ET, Peniel E. Joseph (“The Sword and the Shield”) and Tamara Payne (“The Dead Are Arising”) will discuss their books on Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. with Eric Deggans, NPR’s TV critic and media analyst-contributor for MSNBC and NBC News. At the Library of Congress, we are always looking to celebrate the ways that books connect past to present, and right now we are graced with two superb new books on civil rights heroes whose voices changed how we think about racial justice. I am speaking, of course, of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, who couldn’t have been more different in temperament, yet shared a passionate mission to expose America’s grave social injustices, its long history of institutional racism, and the corrosive effects bigotry has had on our foundational principles of democracy.
