Sensory Processing Disorder? Or ADHD? Distinguishing Symptoms. I remember the day I knew our daughter had a problem. We were rushing to an appointment, hustling along a crowded sidewalk on a humid summer day. I was cautioning Elisabeth about something, dragging her behind me the way you sometimes do with an almost-4-year-old. The traffic was loud and smelled of exhaust, a kid on a bike was blowing a whistle, and the storefronts were bursting with bright vegetables and flowers. Suddenly, my daughter stopped in her tracks and screamed — a long, loud scream of agony and frustration — prompting everyone around us to turn and glare. There was more. I remember another day, too, about two years later. As it turns out, my daughter has both. The correlation of ADD/ADHD and SPD symptoms is shown by a new national study of children ages 2 to 21 done at the University of Colorado. What is SI? For some children with sensory processing disorder, information reaching the senses often feels like an assault of competing stimuli.

Is Your Child “Out of Sync”? Is It Bipolar Disorder or ADHD? Symptoms and Treatment of Bipolar Disorder | ADDitude - Attention Deficit Information. It can be difficult enough to obtain a diagnosis of attention deficit disorder (ADD ADHD), but to complicate matters further, ADHD commonly co-exists with other mental and physical disorders. One review of ADHD adults demonstrated that 42 percent had one other major psychiatric disorder. Therefore, the diagnostic question is not “Is it Bipolar Disorder or ADHD?”

But rather “Is it both?” Perhaps the most difficult differential diagnosis to make is between Bipolar Mood Disorder and ADHD, since they share many symptoms, including mood instability, bursts of energy and restlessness, talkativeness, and impatience. ADHD is characterized by significantly higher levels of inattention, distractibility, impulsivity, and/or physical restlessness than would be expected in a person of similar age and development. Bipolar Mood Disorder (BMD) Making a diagnosis Because of the many shared characteristics, there is a substantial risk of either a misdiagnosis or a missed diagnosis. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Bipolar and ADHD...Together? An Expert Explains The Signs.

Richard, 31, had been diagnosed with ADHD at 12, but he felt that the diagnosis did not explain some of his disabling symptoms. He suffered from terrible depressive episodes and had weeks when he was consistently restless, agitated, and unable to sleep. His therapist said that people with ADHD often had mood fluctuations. Richard did not find the ADHD stimulants that his doctor prescribed to be helpful, and he began to feel worthless and socially isolated. Jack, 17, was diagnosed with ADHD and Oppositional Defiant Disorder at age four. His mother said that on some days “he would wake up on the destructive side of the bed.” Instead of tantrums, she endured rages over things that, on other days, didn’t anger him.

Richard and Jack had ADHD, but they also suffered from Bipolar Disorder (BD), characterized by episodes of depression and of elevated mood states, referred to as hypomanic or manic episodes. Bipolar Facts Approximately 10 million people in the United States have BD. > Psychosis. ADHD and Autism: Could Your Child Have Both Conditions? Your child has been diagnosed with ADHD. But those four letters alone don't seem to explain all of her struggles. You sometimes wonder if she's also on the autism spectrum. Roughly two-thirds of kids with ADHD have at least one co-existing condition, and Autism Spectrum Disorders — ASD — are among the conditions that commonly occur with ADHD. Some studies suggest that up to half of kids with ASD also have ADHD. Similarities and Differences ADHD is marked by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Autism Spectrum Disorders — a continuum of conditions that includes autism, Asperger's syndrome, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) — are characterized by problems with social interactions, communication, and stereotyped (repetitive or ritualistic) behaviors.

Dr. Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria: How to Treat it Alongside ADHD. Rejection sensitive dysphoria (RSD) is an extreme emotional sensitivity and emotional pain triggered by the perception – not necessarily the reality – that a person has been rejected, teased, or criticized by important people in their life. RSD may also be triggered by a sense of failure, or falling short – failing to meet either their own high standards or others’ expectations.

Dysphoria is Greek for “difficult to bear.” It’s not that people with ADHD are wimps, or weak; it’s that the emotional response hurts them much more than it does people without the condition. When this emotional response is internalized, it can imitate full, major depression complete with suicidal ideation. It can take a long time for physicians to recognize that these symptoms are caused by the sudden emotional changes associated with ADHD and rejection sensitivity, while all other object relations are totally normal.

RSD can make people with ADHD anticipate rejection — even when it anything but certain. 1. 2. Israeli school builds cool classroom for ADHD teens. English Sounds Fun | Language Learning and SpLDs. ‘Specific learning differences‘ (SpLDs) are a group of conditions that seem to be caused by differences in the way the brain makes connections, although there is still debate as to why some people develop differently. The best known of these SpLDs is dyslexia, but others, such as dyspraxia and dysgraphia and attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) are becoming more widely recognised.

Asperger’s Syndrome is also considered here as a related SpLD, because co-occurrence is so common, and because of the effects it can have in the language classroom. One very important point to note is that a person who has one SpLD, often has traits of the others, to lesser degrees. Usually, young people are identified first as having dyslexia, or AD/HD, because of the disruptive effect these have on their education, but teachers should remember that a positive identification of one of these SpLDs might mean that the difficulties associated with others are also present.
