4 Ways to End Food Waste. By Modern Farmer on October 1, 2013 Ending food waste is going to take generations of work.
But here are four solutions that are up and running, today. 1. Match.com for Waste What do supermarket distributors do when they have extra produce? Food Cowboy’s website provides a sample scenario: “You are a food bank manager … you get a text message asking whether you can open your warehouse early to accept 3 tons of carrots that were rejected by a distributor because they weren’t straight enough. 2.
In developing nations, food loss often stems from a lack of simple things: Equipment or procedures that, once implemented, could result in untold waste prevention. In Kenya, the use of airtight metal silos, used to store grain before transport, cut crop losses to just 1.2 percent. 3. Food Regulations of the Future? March 29, 2020The federal government today announced new regulations for buying fast food.
Starting June 1, upon entering a national fast food chain restaurant or before ordering via a drive-thru each patron must undergo a Body Mass Index (BMI) analysis. The score will determine portion sizes for adults and children and restrict the options available. Scores are: underweight, normal, overweight, obese and morbidly obese.
The future of our food system depends on healthy soils.

Frankenfood. Frankenfood Gets Supersized. For the first time, scientists have used genetic modification to increase the levels of multiple, rather than single, nutrients in a crop.
The first corn produced through the technique hasn’t yet been tested for dinner-table safety, but if it succeeds, it may signal the development of a new, super-nutritious generation of GM foods. “The major message of the paper is that it’s possible to engineer crops with multiple nutrients,” said study co-author Paul Christou, a plant biochemist at Spain’s University of Lleida. “If you look at other nutritionally enhanced GM crops, up until now people have only been able to increase levels of one nutrient or vitamin.” An estimated 40 to 50 percent of the world’s population suffers from nutrient deficiencies. The reasons for this are complex and sometimes political, but often involve reliance on a few staple crops that do not provide the nutrient balance common to mixed diets in the developed world. Why Home-Cooking From Total Strangers May Be the Future of Food - Emily Badger. A few weeks ago in Midtown Manhattan, I watched six slices of vegetable quiche change hands between two women who never even laid eyes on each other.
Leni Calas had cooked the quiche – peppers, mushrooms, asparagus heads, Gruyère – in her kitchen in Astoria, inside a modest yellow-brick house with an inflatable pool and a vegetable patch out front. She’d packed up the dinner with an arugula salad on the side, the dressing in its own little container. Then on cue, at 4:28 in the afternoon, a bike messenger named Gaetano sporting an Occupy Wall Street T-shirt turned up to pedal the meal to Manhattan. It was 102 degrees outside. Food waste is the symptom, not the problem. Foundation essay: This article on food waste by Tim Lang, Professor of Food Policy at City University London, is part of a series marking the launch of The Conversation in the UK.
Our foundation essays are longer than our usual comment and analysis articles and take a wider look at key issues affecting society. But that’s just what happened when I was asked to taste a chicken taco and tell whether the meat inside was real or fake. The meat certainly had the look and the smell of chicken. I took a bite and it had the taste and texture of real chicken, too. The future of food: Crisis prevention. AROUND the world, the food system is in crisis.
Prices have rocketed; they are now higher in real terms than at any time since 1984. They could rise further still if drought lays waste to China's wheat harvest, as is feared. Food has played some role (how large is hard to tell) in the uprisings in the Middle East. High prices are adding millions to the number who go to bed hungry each night. This is the second price spike in less than four years. This attention is welcome. The Future of Food. The Future of Food. I have criticized him before for investing in projects like sovereign libertarian island-states, but I am glad to see that Paypal founder Peter Thiel is investing in the worthy cause of in vitro food production. The sooner we manufacture most of our food from stem cells or chemicals, rather than grow it, the sooner vast amounts of land on the earth’s surface can be partly or wholly “re-wilded.” In the Age of Gore, environmentalists have been focused primarily on the problem of anthropogenic warming of the earth’s atmosphere.
But we should not neglect another environmental problem: the competition of humanity and domesticated plants and animals with wild species for vast areas of the earth’s surface. This competition resulted from the invention several millennia ago of agriculture, which replaces wild biomass with domesticated biomass—crops and livestock—in the same territories, particularly zones that are temperate and well-watered.

Bug food boom: Insect cuisine provides more than a shock. UN urges people to eat insects to fight world hunger. Future Food Salon April 18, 2013, Toronto. Make your own protein snacks at home with this tabletop insect farm. Industrial designer Katharina Unger has created a sustainable system that will allow people to add protein to their diet by breeding and harvesting fly larvae at home.
The sleek project is called Farm 432, and calls to mind iconic designs like the original iMac — if Jony Ive created insect-harvesting stations, that is. It consists of a large chamber; fly larvae are placed inside a small holding pen at the top. After they transform into flies, they exit the holding pen for the larger chamber where they mate and produce new larvae.
Those fall down into a hidden chamber dubbed "kindergarten," where they grow and eventually climb up through a tube — Unger calls the process "self-harvesting" — and then fall into a removable cup. There the larvae can be taken out, cooked, and eaten — with a few choice candidates placed back into the holding pen at the top to start the process again. Ento Box: The Elegant Insect Meal Of The Future. Though they’re consumed in most of the world, people in the West tend to be a little squeamish about eating bugs. But a new project from a group of design students in England hopes to put edible insects in a more gourmet light. Avant-garde chefs have been trying to introduce insect eating for some time, but these students approached the question not as a gastronomical issue, but rather a design one: How do you make bugs more appealing? The answer is the Ento Box (that’s a portmanteau of bento box and entomology).
Click through the slide show above to see the elegant way you’ll be eating bug-based foods in the future.

Over the weekend, scientists at Dr Mark Post's laboratory in Maastricht University made their final preparations for an event they hope will change the way we see food. On Monday, Dr Post will cook the world's most expensive hamburger, made from meat grown in Petri dishes in his lab. Starting with stem cells extracted from a biopsy of a cow, Post's team grew 20,000 muscle fibres over the course of three months.
Each tiny, hoop-like fibre grew in an individual culture well, suspended in a gel-like growth medium. When they were ready, the fibres were removed individually by hand, cut open and straightened out. Inside the meat lab: the future of food. Electrospun protein may offer meat replacement hope: TNO. Future Technology Could Eliminate the Need to Eat Food. By early 2030s, experts predict nanobots will be developed to improve the human digestive system, and by 2040 or before, as radical as this sounds, we could eliminate our need for food and eating.
The Aqualibrium Garden - The Future of Food by Aqualibrium. We've had a few questions about our project that we wanted to make sure we answered! The Aqualibrium Garden can be used as an aquaponic or a hydroponic system. An aquaponic system is one where fish supply the nutrients that fertilize the grow bed. In a hydroponic system, fish are not required and all that is needed is the placement of nutrients into the water tank. Additionally, the Aqualibrium Garden will come with four snap doors that attach to the bay openings on the bottom of the system to keep out curious pets or kids!
