Sao Paulo’s largest water reservoir down to 5.6% The Cantareira water system, largest of the six reservoirs that provide water to 20 million people living in the metropolitan area of Sao Paulo, Brazil is at 5.6% (as of January 20) of its capacity of one trillion liters (264 billion gallons), as reported by the water utility Sabesp.
During the first two weeks of January 2015 rainfall totaled 7.1 centimeters (2.9 inches), well below the average 27.1 centimeters (10.7 inches). This comes as a result of the worst drought Brazil has faced in 84 years. In all, the reservoir has lost 1.6 percentage points of the stored volume of water from the first day of the year. Reservoirs and rivers that provide water to millions have received less rainfall than hoped for during the first weeks of the wet season, also seen by the state in other five water systems: Alto Tiete is at 11 percent of capacity, Rio Claro 25 percent, Alto Cotia 30 percent, Guarapiranga 40 percent and Rio Grande 70 percent. Holuhraun eruption update - Iceland's largest lava field since the Laki eruption in 1783-84. Iceland's subglacial stratovolcano Bardarbunga, located in NW Vatnajökull ice cap, erupted on August 29, 2014 after a sharp increase in seismic activity which started at 03:00 UTC on August 16, 2014.
Today, almost 5 months since the eruption started, seismic activity is still strong, the rate of the subsidence of the Bardarbunga caldera is still significant and the lava field in its Holuhraun eruption fissure (also known as Nornahraun, meaning "Witches lava") now covers more than 85 km2. Although some areas already received a month’s worth of rain within 24 hours forecasts warn there is more to come. Rate of environmental degradation puts life on Earth at risk, say scientists. Humans are “eating away at our own life support systems” at a rate unseen in the past 10,000 years by degrading land and freshwater systems, emitting greenhouse gases and releasing vast amounts of agricultural chemicals into the environment, new research has found.

Good news and bad news about rising seas. Good news!
Research published this week in the journal Nature finds that the seas did not rise as much during the last century as scientists previously thought. Here’s Justin Gillis with the New York Times: Instead of rising about six inches over the course of the 20th century, as previous research suggested, the sea actually rose by approximately five inches, the team from Harvard and Rutgers Universities found. We have to build much smarter cities if we want to fight climate change.
If we can develop better cities, we can make a big dent in future greenhouse gas emissions.
That’s the gist of a new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The 274 cities researchers looked at are going to need more energy as they grow — a lot more, especially if we continue on our current track. The cities’ energy needs are poised to triple between 2005 and 2050 — but, with forward-thinking urban and transportation planning, we could limit those energy needs so they’ll only double. The Senate will vote to decide if climate change is real. The Anti-Science Climate Denier Caucus. By Tiffany Germain - Guest Contributor Posted on Climate change is happening, humans are the cause, and a shocking number of congressional Republicans — over 56 percent — deny or question the science.
CAP Action conducted a fresh analysis of public statements from current Representatives and Senators from the 114th Congress on climate change. Roll over any state on the map below for information on its resident climate science deniers, or click on the state to be taken to the full quotes and figures. All told, 170 elected representatives in the 114th Congress have taken over $63.8 million from the fossil fuel industry that’s driving the carbon emissions which cause climate change. 72 percent of GOP senators deny climate change. On Thursday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) offered a simple amendment to the controversial bill that would authorize construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline. Sanders’ measure, which he proposed to the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, would have declared it the “sense of Congress” that climate change is real; that it is caused by humans; that it has already caused significant problems; and that the United States needs to shift its economy away from fossil fuels.
