Bluetone. JOYO TECHNOLOGY CO., LTD. What are the best power tubes for metal ? Know Your Amp: Different Kinds of Tubes. Posted on by Orpheo A selection of vintage tubes If the transformers are the heart of your amp and the preamp is the brain, then the soul must be the tubes.
But the thing is, there are so many tubes available, how can we discern the differences? This schematic representation shows the basic structure of a tube. So what is a tube? Please go see a qualified tech in your area if you want to change your tubes! Power Trip: A Guide to Power Tubes and Their Signature Sounds. Photo by Andy Ellis.
Look at the back of any all-tube amp, and you’ll see warmly glowing glass bottles in a variety of shapes and sizes. Power tubes (aka output tubes) are typically the biggest ones of the bunch, and they provide the last stage of amplification for the guitar signal before it’s delivered to the speakers. The “power tube” name is a bit deceptive, however, because these big bottles don’t just power your speakers—they actually play a significant role in shaping your amp’s sound and responsiveness. Regardless of its manufacturer, each power-tube type—EL34, EL84, 6L6, 6V6, 5881, etc. —has a basic sonic personality.
Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Preamp Tubes. Part 1: Preamp Tubes Ah, tubes.
We love ’em, don’t we? But to help them really love us back—and I mean with big, juicy, bear-hug love—we need to know a little bit about what makes them tick, how they vary, and what they do for our precious guitar tone. A quick and easy tube change can make the most dramatic tonal alteration achievable from a single component swap within our amplifiers, other than perhaps a speaker change, but unless you know a little about what different tubes can achieve sonically, that change will be entirely random.
Welcome to a two-part feature in Premier Guitar that will give the uninitiated all the basics needed to help them launch their quest for tubehead status. Once upon a time, vacuum tubes were used all over the place. To get quickly to the heart of tube magic, stop thinking of them as amplification devices and start thinking of them as tone-generating devices. In simple terms, a tube’s job is to make a small voltage (guitar signal) into a bigger one. Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Output Tubes.
However many fancy gizmos the techs devise to give us “warm, tube-like” guitar sounds, real tonehounds know it’s only happening in one place: real tubes!
If you want to get it happening for you, though, you’ve got to understand what’s going on with different tube types, and learn the various ways the wide range of tubes available will affect your sound. In the last issue I discussed preamp tubes, along with a basic primer on how and why tubes do what they do. This trip under the hood we’ll explore output tubes—the big bottles at the back of your amp that pump out the serious wattage. Although some people refer to them as “power” tubes, I feel “output” is far more fitting: for one thing, these tubes create your amp’s output; for another, the term “power” might cause confusion with the third type of tube in an amp—a rectifier tube—which lives in what is correctly described as the power stage of the amplifier.
