Bridges, Meander Patterns, and Water Sports « Math Munch. This past week the Math Munch team got to attend the Bridges 2012.
Bridges is a mathematical art conference, the largest one in the world. This year it was held at Towson University outside of Baltimore, Maryland. The idea of the conference is to build bridges between math and the arts. Participants gave lectures about their artwork and the math that inspired or informed it.
There were workshop sessions about mathematical poetry and chances to make baskets and bead bracelets involving intricate patterns. Quality Mathematics Tasks. Your Kid Might Be Better Off Learning Math In Kazakhstan Than In These States. Unlike students around the world, Americans do not take the international exam Trends in International Math and Science Study, which measures how primary school students are faring in major subjects.
However, a study released by the U.S. government last week shows how American students WOULD fare, if they were to take the test. The results were mixed. While Massachusetts, the highest performing state in the country, had scores aligning with the education powerhouse of Japan, other states like Mississippi and Alabama had scores that were similar to countries that aren't typically lauded for their excellent education systems. Earlier this year I published this post by Edward Miller and Nancy Carlsson-Paige about how the standards smack in the face of what we know about how young children learn. Here’s is a new post with concerns about the developmental appropriateness of some Core math standards. This was written by Carol Burris and John Murphy. 5 Open Education Resources for K-5 Common Core Math.
There is an abundance of math open educational resources on the Web.
So many, in fact, that Education Week asked, "Why is There More Open Content for Math than English? " Common Core is driving a lot of the growth in open education production and curation, with new databases and sources popping up left and right. Khan Academy Common Core Map: It’s a challenge to find specific lessons that align with Common Core proficiencies. Open-Ended Math Problems. Open-Ended Math Problems This site is for the specific purpose of preparing Middle School students for OPEN-ENDED problem solving on standardized tests.
We have divided each month into the five strands from the Philadelphia math standards:Number Theory Measurement Geometry Patterns, Algebra, and Functions Data, Statistics, and Probability There are three levels of difficulty for each standard. We have written and chosen problems from different sources that lend themselves to more than one way of solving. It is our hope that if these are done on a consistent, weekly basis, the students will feel more confident and comfortable at test time. To better prepare for the tests, students should answer with a picture, diagram, or paragraph explaining the solution and how they determined their answers. Try these with your students. As a 1st grade math teacher, I never thought I was teaching the same skills as high school math teachers.
But as I’ve gotten to know the Common Core State Standards, the math practice standards have shown me that effective math teaching looks remarkably similar across grade levels. Through the practice standards, K-12 students will develop skills around problem solving, reasoning and proof, connections, representation, and communication. Regardless of the grade level, focusing on these standards helps students feel comfortable explaining their thought processes, learning from others, and building conceptual understanding. Teaching Channel recently partnered with the American Federation of Teachers to create a series of videos that show how two of the Common Core Math Practice Standards progress throughout the grades. While the goal is for the math practice standards to be used K-12, we know that nothing looks exactly the same across grade levels.
Elementary Upper Elementary Middle School. Lesson Plans to Accompany Published Tasks. This is a guest post by Morgan Saxby, a fifth grade teacher in Chesterfield County, Virginia, who works with Illustrative Mathematics.
Morgan has begun writing lesson plans to accompany published mathematics tasks. A clear step after developing high-quality mathematical tasks is to develop accompanying lesson plans. I wrote seven lesson plans to accompany published tasks, all of which I tested in my classroom. My goal was to write lesson plans that guided students to the level of thinking required by both the standards and the practices. One example is the lesson plan for the task What is a Trapezoid? The format for the lesson plans is consistent through each one. The initial seven lesson plans are listed below, and others will be added in the future. 5.NF How Much Pie? 5.NF How many servings of oatmeal? 5.NF Making Cookies / Cooking Time 3. The strand includes specific suggestions for managing journals, developing prompts for writing, and providing students with feedback on their writing. In addition, the site includes two sample lessons for introducing students to important ideas related to writing about their mathematical thinking. Math progressions by domain. The Common Core State Standards in mathematics were built on progressions: narrative documents describing the progression of a topic across a number of grade levels, informed both by research on children's cognitive development and by the logical structure of mathematics.
These documents were spliced together and then sliced into grade level standards. From that point on the work focused on refining and revising the grade level standards. The early drafts of the progressions documents no longer correspond to the current state of the standards. It is important to produce up-to-date versions of the progressions documents. Here is a suggested arrangement of the high school standards into courses, developed with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Pearson Foundation, by a group of people including Patrick Callahan and Brad Findell. I haven’t looked at it closely, but it seems to be a solid effort by people familiar with the standards, so I put it up for comment and discussion.
There are five files: the first four are graphic displays of the arrangement of the standards into both traditional and integrated sequences, with the standards referred to by their codes. The fifth is a description of the arrangement with the text of the standards and commentary. Grade 6 CC Math Tasks on wikispaces. Gr. 6 CC Math Number Systems Task.
