Where Was Jesus Born? Theologians question biblical accounts of the Nativity. Now archaeologists are doing the same. TEXT AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY AVIRAM OSHRI. Bethlehem - National Geographic Magazine. The “little town of Bethlehem” may not actually be where Jesus was born.

The Gospels of Matthew and Luke were written at least 50 years after Jesus’ death, and some religious scholars believe the writers set their stories in Bethlehem of Judaea to associate Jesus with the House of David. This was to reinforce Jesus’ status as the Messiah of the Hebrew Scriptures in order to attract early Jewish converts to Christianity. Many archaeologists and theological scholars believe Jesus was actually born in either Nazareth or Bethlehem of Galilee, a town just outside Nazareth, citing biblical references and archaeological evidence to support their conclusion.

Throughout the Bible, Jesus is referred to as “Jesus of Nazareth,” not “Jesus of Bethlehem.” In fact, in John (7:41- 43) there is a passage questioning Jesus’ legitimacy because he’s from Galilee and not Judaea, as the Hebrew Scriptures say the Messiah must be. The paperback version of this book demonstrated convincingly that Nazareth was not inhabited during the first century BCE and the first century CE, at least up until the time of the first Jewish revolt and destruction of the Temple of Yahweh (70 CE).

Surprisingly, after re-examination of all evidence from all primary reports published up to 2008, it also showed that almost no artifacts at all had even been specifically claimed to date from that precise period! Rather, imprecise terms like "Roman Period" were employed to deceive the public into thinking the place had been inhabited at the time of Pontius Pilate et al. Nazareth – The Town that Theology Built. The Lost City The Gospels tell us that Jesus's home town was the 'City of Nazareth' ('polis Natzoree'): And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a CITY of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.

(Luke1.26,27) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the CITY of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; because he was of the house and lineage of David: (Luke 2.3,4) But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee: And he came and dwelt in a CITY called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.

I invited Earl Doherty to use the blog venue in order to respond as soon as possible to Bart Erhman's "Did Jesus Exist? " after its release. My reason was not because I agree fully with Doherty's arguments (Doherty himself acknowledges some of our differences in the book) but because I respect his point of view, his depth of knowledge and clarity of thought, and his exemplary civil manner in engaging with those who challenge his position. I also believed that posting on a blog that had regularly been voted among the top ten biblioblogs (until conservative theologians removed it from the competition) would serve to maximise exposure of his response. The results paid off. Readers regularly asked when and if Doherty was going to publish those instalments in an e-book.

Some readers posted disagreements with Doherty's arguments, and Doherty regularly took the time to engage those, too.
