Throughout the Commonwealth, repositories house irreplaceable collections of books and private and public documents that serve as a rich resource for researchers involved in local, state, regional, national, and international studies. Library staffs in public and academic libraries and in other repositories have long collected materials that document their immediate and adjoining locales as well as focusing on specific collecting areas. Although much of this material is monographs and pamphlets, a significant portion is manuscript material (personal and organizational papers), photographs, posters, ticket stubs, broadsides, etc. USGenWeb: MA Links. The maps presented include twenty-four manuscript maps of local towns and counties dating from 1637-1809 and eight iconic printed maps of Massachusetts and Boston. Seventy-two meticulously drawn manuscript maps by Samuel Chester Clough (1873-1949) present a wealth of information about property owners in Boston during the 17th and late 18th centuries. During the course of his life, Clough compiled an enormous amount of data about Boston landowners from town, court, and tax records and he indexed it in a way that allowed him to create maps of Boston at different time periods. MHC: Town Reconnaissance Survey Reports. Reconnaissance Survey Town Reports, produced for MHC’s Statewide Reconnaissance Survey between 1979 and 1987, introduce the historical development of each of the Commonwealth’s municipalities.

MHC: Town Reconnaissance Survey Reports

Each report contains an historic overview, a description of topography, and political boundaries. Each report evaluates the town’s existing historic properties inventory, highlights significant historic buildings and settlement patterns, and presents threats to these resources. A bibliography lists key secondary resources. Town reports are designed for use with a series of town maps that demarcate settlement patterns, transportation corridors, and industrial sites for each historic period. The maps are on file and available for consultation at MHC. These reports are two decades or more old. Reports are available for 319 of the 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth.
