Thank you for visiting Little House in the Suburbs. Please subscribe and you'll get great simple living tips and how-to articles delivered to your inbox, for free! In the DIY world of home health and beauty products, deodorant seems to be the the most feared replacement. Stinking is NOT OKAY in our culture, right? But aluminum crammed in your pores cannot be good for you, and it seems in recent years that store-bought deodorant is becoming less and less effective anyway. This deodorant uses a natural moisture absorber (cornstarch), a natural deodorizer (baking soda), and a natural anti-bacteria/fungal oil (tea tree oil) to keep any stink from developing in the first place. So, here’s what I suggest….make this stuff ahead and use it on SATURDAY, or a sick day, or any day you aren’t going to see anyone special, so you’ll feel secure and not look like a nut obsessively sniffing your underarms all day. Recipe: quinoa, black bean & sweet potato croquettes with pumpkin seed chipotle cream - Dreena Burton - Vegan Soccer Mom Black Bean, Sweet Potato and Quinoa Croquettes with Pumpkin Seed Chipotle Cream I recently asked my blog followers which of my recipes they’d like posted. I’ve been working my way through new recipes for my fourth cookbook. A few months ago, I posted a photo for these Black Bean, Sweet Potato and Quinoa Croquettes with Pumpkin Seed Chipotle Cream. These gluten-free patties are somewhat delicate and fragile, and so should be eaten with a fork as a patty or croquette, rather than on a bun as a burger. Black Bean, Quinoa, and Sweet Potato Spicy Croquettes In a skillet over medium-high heat, add the oil. Note: For kids, omit the chile in the sauté stage, and then before making patties, remove a portion for your children. Note: Cook the sweet potatoes in advance by baking whole. Recipe copyright 2010 Dreena Burton. Pumpkin Seed Chipotle Cream Using a hand blender or blender, combine all ingredients. Note: Be sure to blend this sauce long enough until it is creamy smooth.

Persephone Magazine &124; Blog &124; The Lazy Lady's Guide to... At some point near the middle of March, I always decide that I’m “done” with winter. The sweaters and jackets get pushed to the back of the closet, the flip flops come out, and I inevitably freeze my butt off for several weeks until the weather catches up with my warm-weather state of mind. Likewise, my cravings for fresh herbs and veggies are always a little ahead of the season. Growing your own herbs is a great way to save money and avoid buying too much at a time and letting most of it go to waste. If it’s still too cold to plant outside where you are (or if you’re short on space!) What you’ll need: Tin containers with snap-on plastic lids (tea, cocoa, and coffee cans are a good bet), coat hangers, pliers, scissors, herbs (I bought basil, rosemary, dill, and cilantro for about $2.50 each), masking tape, coffee filters, a nail, a hammer, X-acto knife, scrap fabric or paper, and glue or spray adhesive. Slide the bottom inside the can, holding it up from inside. Flip the can over.

Okay, so maybe wait ’til lunch, or ’til you get home from work, or ’til you’re through selling your body to science for the day. Apparently lots of people hate boiled seitan, but I am not one of them. Remember that this is seitan, not a processed dead-animal analogue, so I’m not inclined to boast that you’re going to fool an obstinate omnivore with these patties (if you turn them into nuggets, though, all bets are off!). Don’t skimp on the vegan Worcestershire sauce; if you must, you can try substituting some (vegan!) Vegan Fried Chicken Recipe type: Entree Prep time: Cook time: Total time: Serves: 6 The time it takes for your seitan to cook fully may vary depending on several variables, including how rapid your simmer is. *Ha!

A Complete Guide to Urban Exploration - Bearings We live in a post-industrial world, and our connection to the modes of production, our infrastructure, and the cogs of society is becoming more and more disembodied from day-to-day life. This guide is meant to be an introduction to one of the fastest growing hobbies our modern time: Urban Exploration. Why? The definition of Urban Exploration may be different for every adherent, but most urban explorers call themselves modern historians, discoverers, archivers, documentarians, and architecture buffs. Some explore for simple aesthetic reasons because they find the crumbling edifices of society to be perfect artistic subjects. Others find a certain level of adventure and excitement in exploring off-limits areas or skirting the law to reach places that most people can’t see. How? The methods of urban exploration, much like the motivations of its adherents, vary. The best way to start exploring is to pair up with a buddy. The Gear The hobby is known for its extremely low barriers to entry.

Natural dye Naturally dyed skeins made with madder root, Colonial Williamsburg, VA Natural dyes are dyes or colorants derived from plants, invertebrates, or minerals. The majority of natural dyes are vegetable dyes from plant sources—roots, berries, bark, leaves, and wood—and other organic sources such as fungi and lichens. The discovery of man-made synthetic dyes in the mid-19th century triggered a long decline in the large-scale market for natural dyes. In the early 21st century, the market for natural dyes in the fashion industry is experiencing a resurgence.[2] Western consumers have become more concerned about the health and environmental impact of synthetic dyes in manufacturing and there is a growing demand for products that use natural dyes. Survival Sanitation: How to Deal with Human Waste This is the second post in a three-part series on survival sanitation. In a SHTF situation, proper sanitation is of utmost importance if you want to keep your family from getting seriously sick. When you add to that a lack of medical facilities due to grid-down issues, staying healthy becomes even more crucial. In this series I discuss the skills you need to avoid getting and spreading disease, and how to deal with waste and trash when your town and city services are no longer working. When the grid goes down it doesn’t take long for serious sanitation problems to erupt. In 1998, Auckland suffered a 5-week long power outage that halted water supplies, causing a large part of the city’s apartment dwellers and office workers to lose the ability to flush. Here are two accounts of that time (please see footnotes for full articles): Since water and sewage rely on electrically-driven pumps to get them into office blocks and towers, these services often aren’t available either. Here’s how:
