The Practice of Public Sociology: Sociological Review Early Career Event Tickets, Thu, 24 Nov 2016 at 09:30 The Sociological Review’s Early Career Board is delighted to announce its forthcoming event: Manchester Digital Laboratory November 24th, Manchester, 9.30-18.00 For over a decade public sociology has been a mainstream topic of discussion within the discipline. While practiced prior to the 2004 address by Michael Burawoy to the American Sociological Association, its identification and elaboration on an intellectual level was crucial to its popularisation. But is it possible that the voluminous literature that emerged in the years following has left us with a public sociology that is overly-discursive? While undoubtedly important, is there a risk that theorising about public sociology gets in the way of its practice?

Independent learning and spaced learning For the 2016/17 academic year I was determined that I would use a more flipped learning and independent learning style with my A Level students, and start introducing it with my GCSE classes as well. I wanted to do this as I felt that by spoon-feeding the students the information I was doing them a disservice and, rather than educating them, I was just schooling them for the exam. I also selfishly, wanted to try and create a better work/home balance and be more organised in my planning. So I started to using a new Lecture-Seminar system with the A level classes. Futuredocs FUTURE DOCS is a platform for creative encounters between documentary filmmakers and human rights defenders. It stems from a deep and established conviction that even though these two groups very often strive to turn the public’s attention to pressing issues, too rarely do they have a chance to work together. As a result, many exigent human rights problems remain hardly known, while other are hugely overrepresented.

The education system would fall over without many hours of teacher overtime. How long until this goodwill is withdrawn? There is no doubt that the vast majority of teachers do far more work than they are either contracted or paid to do. Recent BBC research showed that the average primary class teacher, if there is such a thing, worked 59 hours per week. If we consider that only 20 hours of this time is actually in front of a class, then it means a phenomenal amount of time is spent on preparation or marking or taking on the many additional responsibilities a class teacher now has. These extra hours teachers work are interesting when our unions expect a 32.5 to 35-hour week. The truth therefore is that the education system is surviving only because of the additional work all our teachers do – otherwise known as teacher "goodwill". This goodwill means teachers teachers attend far too many meetings, both before and after school.

Digital Skills Support Improving your personal digital skills and applying these skills in teaching and learning. We all need to keep our digital skills up to date, for our own personal use, to operate more effectively in our jobs and to help improve the digital skills of our learners. We are stronger in the areas that we practise regularly and not so confident with digital skills that we use less often. There is a need for us to support our learners consistently to develop and use a wide range of digital skills.
