Melting the Ice Curtain: islands on the Russia/US border Two islands, divided by an international border and separated by geopolitics, are on the verge of being reunited. But will fractured US-Russian relations stand in the way? Between eastern Russia and the western edge of Alaska sit two small islands: Big Diomede and Little Diomede. The islands are separated by just four kilometres of ocean, the international date line and the Russian-United States border. Both islands once had small yet established Iñupiat populations.

Military Spending - Our World In Data Military spending is intimately linked to war. In times of peace, few countries spend more than 5% of GDP on their military, choosing instead to maintain their capabilities and make use of their armies in other ways. Empirical View How to Make Maps and Influence People Geoff McGhee is a journalist and data visualizer at Stanford University’s Bill Lane Center for the American West. Data Points is a new series where we explore the world of data visualization, information graphics, and cartography. We depend on maps every day—to navigate, to check the weather, to understand the world. TV Review of the Week: HyperNormalisation REVIEWING the week’s television for The National isn’t a jammy gig. It’s a job like any other – except I have no-one to speak to and am developing nasty back pain from being curled on the sofa all day while trying to balance a laptop on my knee. Yes, it’s a job like any other which means I still get to moan at the various tasks which need to be worked through, but instead of grumbling at spreadsheets or clients, I’ll grumble at having to devote an hour to the latest weak and watery drama, or 30 minutes to a very poor comedy. I’ll moan at having to stick with them long after most viewers will have surely switched off.

BRL Radiac Calculators 1 and 2 The RADIAC Calculator No. 1 was produced by the UK company Blundell Rules Limited and is based on the Radiation Dosage Calculator designed by William Orr of Connecticut University in 1951. The company moved from Luton to Weymouth in 1956. The calculator shown below must have been produced after that date since the back gives the company’s address as Weymouth. However, the company may have started producing the calculator as early as 1952. A lot must have been produced because they are often on eBay. They were used by other countries besides the UK.

Anger as Spain lets Russian warships refuel on way to back Aleppo bombing Spain is facing criticism for reportedly preparing to allow the refuelling of Russian warships en route to bolstering the bombing campaign against the besieged Syrian city of Aleppo. Warships led by the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov are expected to take on fuel and supplies at the Spanish port of Ceuta after passing through the Straits of Gibraltar on Wednesday morning. Spanish media reported that two Spanish vessels, the frigate Almirante Juan de Borbón and logistical ship Cantabria, were shadowing the warships as they passed through international waters, and that the Admiral Kuznetsov, along with other Russian vessels and submarines, would dock at Ceuta to restock after 10 days at sea. Late on Tuesday night, El País reported that the Spanish ministry of foreign affairs was reviewing the permit issued to the Russian flotilla to stop at Ceuta. Last week British Royal Navy vessels monitored the Russian warships as they moved through the English Channel.

China's Artificial Islands Are Bigger (And a Bigger Deal) Than You Think Surely you have heard the news — China has been dredging up coral reefs and creating artificial islands in the South China Sea with the purpose of enforcing their claims to “indisputable sovereignty” of their “Nine Dash Line”, and has defiantly continued to do so in the face of legal condemnation by the Hague’s Permanent Court of Arbitration. While the reactions of the United States and other nations to China’s island-building campaign have been vocal, some U.S. analysts and experts have been largely dismissive of the new islands’ potential effects on the regional balance of power. A recent RAND study stated:

Cold war: Iceland (the country) may sue Iceland (the chain) over name The Icelandic government has confirmed it is considering launching a lawsuit against British supermarket Iceland over its name. Iceland’s ministry of foreign affairs said that it is contemplating filing a suit against the frozen foods giant 45 years after it was founded. “I can confirm that this is being looked into, but no decision has been made,” a spokesman for the ministry told the Press Association.
