Green Choices - Sustainable fashion & fabrics While there are serious environmental impacts associated with many fabrics there are some whose impact is much less. Organic cotton: Wear Organic is a project s a campaign run by the Pesticide Action Network UK (PAN UK). It aims to reduce the problems caused by pesticides used particularly in cotton and promotes organic and fair trade alternatives. It provides information for consumers on the environmental impacts of fabric production. Organic cotton garments are likely to be free from chlorine bleaches and synthetic dyes. Hemp is a thoroughly ecological crop: highly productive, easy to cultivate and pest tolerant, so needing few or no agrochemicals whilst at the same time binding and enriching the soil with its deep roots. Hemp clothing specialists include The Hemp Store, and The Hemp Trading Company, which offers ‘skatewear, boardwear, streetwear, clubwear’. Bamboo is the latest plant material to hit the eco-friendly fabrics market.

Green is The New Black: Why Sustainable Fashion is so important “It is well established now that the sourcing, treating and transporting of garments has a negative impact on the environment. That is particularly so when items have travelled half way around the world. By making simple decisions, like buying products that have been manufactured locally, or buying better quality and fewer items, customers can help a shift away from disposable fashion.” In recent years the fashion world has started to take responsibility for the fact that “fast fashion” is detrimental to our environment and the future of the planet. Encouraging people to think about purchases and buy investment pieces that last, rather than the “it” piece of the season, is a definitive step in the right direction for saving us money in the long run, and protecting our planet. It isn’t just the pure amount of textile waste that poses a problem for the planet. About Sir Plus Sir Plus makes exceptional quality clothing in the UK, using what is known in the clothing industry as cabbage.
