These Maps Show You How to Live, Not Just Where Data for GOOD Knowledge is the first step on the way to progress. It used to be that paper maps were the free gifts that came with your new compass, graphically representing geography via points, lines, and fire-breathing dragons—all of which indicated orientation, distance, latitude, longitude, and the sheer vastness of uncharted territory. But today’s multidimensional digital maps are comprehensive, interactive, and they’ve got the compass built right in. Plus, they’re changing the way we interact with our environments and with each other. According to Di-Ann Eisnor, the founder of map-based driving app Waze, “People really do want to help each other, and if they feel like they are part of something that is helping make a difference, they become passionate about it.” Image via Green Map System screenshot. Ultimately, maps like Brawer’s do a lot more than visually represent the cities we call home: They change the way we approach our urban lives. "Supertrees" photo by Suzanne Lee.
Full text | The health impacts of globalisation: a conceptual framework Figure 3 shows that the impact of globalisation on each proximal health determinant is mediated by changes in several distal factors (Figure 3; arrows 5–12). The most important relationships will be discussed in more detail below. It is important to note that health policies and health-related policies can have an influence on all proximal factors (Figure 3; arrow 5). Health services Health services are increasingly influenced by globalisation-induced changes in health care policy (Figure 3; arrow 5), economic development and trade (Figure 3: arrow 6), and knowledge (Figure 3; arrow 7), but also by migration (3: arrow 7). Although the WHO aims to assist governments to strengthen health services, government involvement in health care policies has been decreasing and, subsequently, medical institutions are more and more confronted with the neoliberal economic model. The increasing trade in health services can have profound implications for provision of proper health care. Lifestyle Food
The Image Hollywood Created of Africa After viewing Mama Hope's video, "Alex Presents Commando," Gabriel, Benard, Brian and Derrik (the Kenyan men in this video) told us they wanted to make one that pokes fun at the way African men are portrayed in Hollywood films. They said, "If people believed only what they saw in movies, they would think we are all warlords who love violence." They, like Mama Hope, are tired of the over-sensationalized, one-dimensional depictions of African men and the white savior messaging that permeates our media. They wanted to tell their own stories instead, so we handed them the mic and they made this video. We started this series so you could begin to reimagine Africa.

Mexican doodles I never had a class that didn’t ask if I wear a kilt when I am in my country. I wonder if Mexican teachers working away from home get asked the same thing about sombreros. Liberal senator wants windfarm inquiry to recognise 'adverse health effects' | Australia news A new federal inquiry could call for commonwealth oversight of windfarm regulations and demand recognition of the alleged health impacts of turbines on people living near them, according to Coalition senators. The prime minister, Tony Abbott, dismayed the wind industry on Thursday when he told Sydney radio announcer Alan Jones that he wished the government had been able to reduce the number of new windfarms more than was possible in a recent renewable energy deal with Labor, and agreed windfarms had “potential health impacts”. The government had previously claimed it was demanding a reduction in the renewable energy target because the industry would be unable to meet it. West Australian Liberal backbencher Chris Back, who sits on the new senate select inquiry into windfarms, said it was looking at “what role the federal Clean Energy Regulator [CER] should have in checking that wind farms are compliant with state laws and guidelines.”
Forget John Lewis, this is the saddest Christmas ad you'll ever see | Business Handkerchiefs at the ready: the German supermarket chain Edeka has aired a Christmas ad that could top John Lewis’s “Man on the Moon” as this season’s biggest tear-jerker. In the ad, which has been viewed on YouTube almost 10m times, a lonely old man comes up with drastic measures to bring his family together: he fakes his own death. It starts with the man, played by British actor Arthur Nightingale, receiving a voicemail from his daughter telling him that, once again, the family won’t make it home for Christmas. He sits alone at the dinner table, enduring yet another lonely Christmas. In the next scene, his children, all busy in daily life, get the news that their father has died. They all meet at their father’s house, grieving and dressed in black, but to their astonishment find the table set for dinner and their father, obviously alive, emerging from the kitchen.
Watch the United States grow before your eyes - The Washington Post On March 4, 1789, the U.S. Constitution took effect, forming a nation of 13 colonies and a whole heck of a lot of unorganized territory. On August 21, 1959, Congress admitted Hawaii as the 50th state. Now, a clever Reddit user, Anthony Vincent, on the subreddit appropriately dubbed Mapporn, has made this handy gif, using maps created by another cartographic expert, Andrew Leonard, of all the steps it took to get us from point A to point B: Graphic courtesy Anthony Vincent More: 25 maps and charts that explain America Real-time data and plots auroral activity
