Artivist Film Festival & Awards
The Artivist Film Festival & Awards is an international film festival and awards ceremony dedicated to recognizing activist efforts of filmmakers, specifically in the areas of human rights, child advocacy, environmental preservation, and animal rights.[1] Background[edit] The Festival is held annually and tours internationally. Its mission is to strengthen the voice of activist/artists ("artivists"), while raising awareness for global causes.[2] The festival is produced by Artivist Collective, a nonprofit organization founded in August 2003 by Diaky Diaz, Bettina Wolff, and Christopher Riedesel.[3] The first Artivist Film & Awards Festival was held April 27, 2007 at Hollywood's Egyptian Theater. Honorees were Ed Begley, Jr., Tippi Hedren, Mike Farrell and France Nuyen.[4] The third annual festival was held in Los Angeles on November 9, 2006, and premiered the film Fast Food Nation. Les chaleurs du festival Burning Man
Sur la côte Ouest des États-Unis, le festival Burning Man, le plus dingue de la planète, s'est achevé la nuit dernière. Récit tout en longueur de ces folles nuits dans la ville éphémère de Black Rock City. MAJ : Le Burning man dans une (belle) vidéo ? Tous les ans, au début du mois de septembre, se déroule dans le désert du Nevada le fameux festival Burning Man [en]. Burning Man c’est un peu une incarnation de la Zone d’Autonomie Temporaire d’Hakim Bey, avec couleurs, costumes excentriques, installations artistiques, numériques et pyrotechniques hors du commun, voitures mutantes (art cars) tout droit sorties de MadMax errant dans un décor post-apocalyptique, interdiction de pratiquer toute transaction commerciale pendant le rassemblement… Black Rock City [en] est un « espace autre », recréé ex-nihilo par des milliers de « burners » qui forment cette ville qui devient alors la troisième plus grande du Nevada. La première fois que j’en ai entendu parler, c’était en 2009. Burn, baby burn !
Paul Klein (art activist)
Paul Klein (born 1946) is an American art dealer. He was chosen 2006 Man of the Year by the Chicago Society of Artists.[1] Klein works for the Briddge Group providing financial and legacy planning for collectors. He was the first executive director of the Chicago ART Project.[2] From 2004-2008 he was the art curator for the 2,500,000-square-foot (230,000 m2) expansion of McCormick Place,[3] the editor of ArtLetter,[1] and wrote for "Chicago Life" which was distributed regionally in the New York Times.[citation needed] The Museum of Contemporary Art’s popular 12 x 12 program of presenting one Chicago artist a month is attributable to him. D’origine portoricaine et haïtienne, né en 1960 à Brooklyn dans l’Etat de New York et mort à New York en 1988 à la suite d’une overdose à l’âge de vingt-sept ans, Basquiat appartient à la génération des graffiteurs qui a brusquement émergé à New York à la fin des années 70. En 1977, il commence à signer ses graffitis du nom de SAMO (pour « Same Old Shit ») accompagné d’une couronne et du sigle du copyright. Au cours de sa fulgurante carrière, sa peinture passe de la rue au tableau. Son univers mélange les mythologies sacrées du vaudou et de la Bible en même temps que la bande dessinée, la publicité et les médias, les héros afro-américains de la musique et de la boxe, et l’affirmation de sa négritude. Impermanent Sand Paintings by Andres Amador
San Francisco-area landscape artist Andreas Amador etches massive sand drawings onto beaches during full moons when his canvas reaches its largest potential. Using only a rake and often several helpers the geometric and organic shapes are slowly carved into the sand, often interacting with the physical topography like the stones in a zen garden. The works exist for only a few moments, just long enough to snap a few photographs before being completely engulfed by the encroaching tide. Amador has also collaborated on a number of killer marriage proposals, the question popped as part of his elaborate drawings viewable from an elevated distance. Man on wire: The story of Philippe Petit
Standing alongside Yung Rizzle last night, faced with the question of what to watch, Russ’ recommendation of Man On Wire came to mind. Not to be confused with Denzel Washington’s 2004 action drama Man on Fire , Man on Wire tells the tale of Philippe Petit, a French high-rope artist whom in 1974 gained global notoriety for walking across the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center on a wire. Having seen the towers in a magazine six years before, walking the across quickly became Petit’s dream and obsession. Studying nearly every facet of the towers, Petit built a team of supporters to help him infiltrate, scale and walk the towers. Considered by many as the “artistic crime of the century,” Man on Wire is the story of Petit’s extraordinary pursuit to the top of the World Trade Center.
