L?art de la r?trographie ? Article ? OWNI, Digital Journalism

Facebook launches Groupon competitor with 'Deals' platform At a press conference at its head office today, Facebook announced a new Deals platform that allows local merchants to target and offer deals to Facebook users. The new platform could prove to be big competition for social-buying giant Groupon. The Deals platform is built around Facebook's Places feature. It allows users to find specials around them, and it allows merchants to offer specials to drive more business, without paying Facebook a dime. The Deals platform allows users to launch Facebook on their mobile and search for deals available around them, see what deals their friends have purchased, and see what deals are being offered by businesses they "like." Read more... Facebook says its Deals product is designed to solve an age-old problem of getting local businesses online.

How To Create Outstanding Modern Infographics In this tutorial you will learn that data doesn't have to be boring, it can be beautiful! Learn how to use various graph tools, illustration techniques and typography to make an accurate and inspiring infographic in Adobe Illustrator. Start by using the Rectangle Tool (M) to draw a shape. Give it a subtle radial gradient too. The entire design is based on a grid of four columns. To make the columns first select the rectangle and drag a guide onto the centre of the shape. Condense the shape so it fits within the left-most guide and centre guide. Move the shape over to the right and add another guide to the centre here. Using the Rectangle Tool (M) draw a thin white box on the centre line that will be the width of the gap between the columns. Repeat the process for the other columns with your final result being below. I like to place the most important graphics first and work-in the ancillary charts and graphs afterwards. Give the circles a variety of gradients. That's it!

After Seeing the iPad 2, Samsung Reconsiders Galaxy Tab Pricing In a refreshingly honest statement, Samsung's mobile division VP Lee Don-Joo admitted that the iPad 2 made some parts of Samsung's 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab look "inadequate," and the iPad 2's pricing might force Samsung to lower the price of its tablet. "Apple made it very thin (...) We will have to improve the parts that are inadequate," Lee Don-Joo told Yonhap News Agency. We feel that a bit of information might have gotten lost in translation from Korean to English, as we definitely don't expect Samsung to pull the 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab from the market and release a thinner version. The other part of Lee Don-Joo's statement is clearer and far more telling. Samsung, unlike some of its competitors — for example, the Motorola Xoom — won't try to compete with the iPad at a higher price point just because some of the hardware of its tablet looks better on paper and that, in our opinion, is the right approach. 16 CV "graphiques" (It’s actually up to 18 now.) A number of designers have attempted to design a visual, infographic resume, and while this is certainly not mainstream (yet), it is gaining some momentum. I wanted to highlight some of the great examples available on the web, but the line between an infographic resume and a designer resume is tough not to cross. I’ve tried to stay true to only infographic versions here, and didn’t include many good illustrated resumes that didn’t include any visualizations. Michael Anderson’s 2008 concept on an infographic resume (above) is probably the most well known. It’s been tweeted, dugg, reddit-ed and featured on FastCompany.com. I decided to update my résumé with a different perspective on the typical time-line theme. I do agree it’s more of an overview and less of a project-experience-oriented resume, but I’ve been thinking a lot about (and looking at) resumes lately, and I feel like what you really need to do is grasp someone’s attention first. Is Apple a Social Company? Paul Greenberg described Apple as a product and engineering centric company, as opposed to a customer and social media centric company, in the interview with Dennis Howlett we posted yesterday. But today, Mindtouch Executive Vice President of Sales Mark Fidelman, writing for Cloudave, identifies Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing Phillip W. Schiller as the top social Chief Marketing Officer of the Fortune 100. What gives? View full size image Although Apple fans affectionately refer to Steve Jobs as "Steve," he's never been a particularly accessible CEO. Not only is Jobs MIA from the social scene, but so is the company. So why are people so enthusiastic about Apple that they feel like they are on a first name basis with the CEO even though the company seems like it couldn't care less about their input? But it could be that there's more to it. And then there's Schiller. So maybe Apple doesn't need to pay attention to social media.

MacBook Pro - The new MacBook Pro. Huge leaps in performance.

Apple to Unveil IPad 2 on March 2 in San Francisco | Kara Swisher | BoomTown | AllThingsD To those who care intensely about this kind of stuff–which would be pretty much everyone in the tech ecosystem–Apple will hold its much-anticipated event on March 2, where the tech giant seems poised to unveil a new version of its hugely successful iPad, according to multiple sources. As in, iPad 2! Or, as BoomTown is now officially nicknaming it: iPad Too! Analysts expect the iPad 2 to be thinner than its predecessor and feature an improved display, as well as front-facing camera and Facetime video chat support. In its last earnings calls, Apple said it had sold nearly 15 million iPads, since it went on sale last spring. This is a very big deal, although Apple will be facing increased competition with the launch of a passel of tablets coming from numerous manufacturers, most of which are using the Honeycomb version of Google’s Android mobile operating system. In that case, the venue is likely to be the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Now that this date is confirmed–at least by me!

Interest in Apple’s iPhone 4 drops as free HTC smartphones tempt UK consumers A new report from price comparison website uSwitch shows that as UK consumers look to tighten their spending, they are increasingly turning to free mobile deals that include smartphones from HTC and Samsung, leading to a drop in interest in Apple’s iPhone 4. The Mobile Tracker from uSwitch, which ranks the UK’s favourite mobile handsets based on live searches and sales, shows HTC’s Desire, Desire HD and Wildfire occupying the top three positions, with half of the most popular smartphones running Google’s Android mobile operating system. The HTC Wildfire has proved popular with consumers, offering the full Android experience for a low price but the HTC Desire has remained consistent, holding the top spot with its powerful hardware despite launching nearly a year ago. Launches Subscriptions on the App Store iPhone 5 to Have 3.7-inch Screen, Bigger Home Button and iPod Style Body? - TNW Apple Compiling a series of rumors and tips, Joshua Topolsky of This Is My Next has posted up a mockup of what they believe could be the iPhone 5 along with a set of details about it’s possible features. They make it clear that this particular set of features could never actually see the light of day but the information that they have is very specific about certain changes that we may see in the iPhone 5. They’re also careful to stress that the image of the potential iPhone 5 that they included, which you can see below, is a crude mockup and not an actual Apple design. The screen for instance has been rumored to grow to 3.7″ in size with a resolution of 312ppi, which is a drop from the iPhone 4′s current 326ppi but still above the ‘Retina Display limit’ of 300ppi. The change would mean very little additional effort for developers and should not require any change in their apps. You’ll notice that the mockup also has a larger home button.
