Crowdsourcing.org 5 Steps For Starting and Funding a Social Good Enterprise The Commerce With a Conscience Series is supported by FedEx. FedEx does more than shipping. They offer solutions like transporting heart valves to those in need and helping entrepreneurs bring their ideas to life. See how. Each year, non-profits raise $300 billion, 13% of which is donated online. And yet, fundraising is one of the most challenging aspects of launching a non-profit. But with a savvy social media strategy, a passionate and innovative team, a business-inspired financial model and long nights with a laptop, your fundraising efforts can really take off. 1. Looking internally to find out what you really care about can be overwhelming and confusing, but it is undoubtedly the most essential element to starting a successful social enterprise. We all have those things that even in the midst of stress and disarray, they energize us and give us renewed strength and purpose. 2. What matters most is that you stay true to those founding values as you grow. 3. 4. 5.
Resident Artist Program Penland Resident Artist Program Penland's resident artists are full-time artists who spend three years living and working in Penland's school community. The program is designed for artists who are at some pivotal moment in their career—the residency is an opportunity for them to test ideas and make choices that will have a lasting effect on their work and their lives. Resident artists may use the time to develop their studio practice, to work out the practicalities of making a living, to push technical and conceptual boundaries, or to explore entirely new directions in their work. The primary expectation of resident artists is that they engage intently with their work. They are also expected to have an open door policy, welcoming students, instructors, and the public to their studios, both informally and formally through the resident open house that is part of each Penland session. Resident artists work independently and set their own goals for their residencies. Qualifications Costs
Silverdocs: Talking transmedia and crowdfunding While the Silverdocs Documentary Festival and Conference in Silver Spring spent the past week showcasing the best of international documentary from the past year, panel sessions at the end of the week are aiming to point the way forward in doc production and distribution. Thursday’s “Crowdfunding Success Strategies” session, conducted by filmmaker and DocuMentors co-founder Jilann Spitzmiller, broke down the mystery behind creating a successful crowdfunding campaign. Spitzmiller drew from her own experience raising funds for her upcoming project Still Dreaming through IndieGoGo, as well as that of other filmmakers who’ve turned to crowdfunding to finance their projects (such as Jennifer Fox, who recently raised more than US$150,000 for her doc My Reincarnation via Kickstarter). While some filmmakers may view crowdfunding as a respite from shrinking commissions and tedious grant applications, Spitzmiller told the packed room that it is not an easy path. Silverdocs continues until June 26.
Are book apps the next chapter for ebooks? Add to that the fact that an ereader can store hundreds of books and you have a gadget that can leave even the pickiest commuter or holidaymaker spoiled for choice. With ebooks now growing in popularity, publishers are beginning to think about enhancing ebooks and even recreating books as apps for tablet computers. Gareth Malone will be speaking at Hay about his new book, Music for the People: The Pleasures and Pitfalls of Classical Music. In print it’s an enthusiastic guide to classical music but buy it from Apple’s iBookstore and you can get a version that’s enhanced with clips from the music being described, which makes it much easier to understand the point being made. Enhanced ebooks, says Malone, provide “the opportunity to bring all this stuff to life in a way that you could previously only do on TV”. Jennifer Egan’s novel A Visit From the Goon Squad, recently released in paperback, is also available as an iPad app. “Poetry is much more structured.
The Agitator Giving of Life A Downpour of Giving and Love Have you ever witnessed the downpour of a rain storm moving in across a relatively still body of water? It’s an amazing experience to feel the cool... »Keep reading Jana Pullman Bookbinding a book about the decorative techniques used in fine leather binding. I bound this book a few years ago but did not finish the decorative work on it until this summer. It had been set aside while I was deciding what to do for a design. When binding the book, I used a Japanese chiryogami paper for the endsheets and it was this print design that finally gave me the idea for the design. The answer to my problem was eggshells. I glued a piece of black Japanese tissue to a thin piece of Plexiglas to give me a flat surface for gluing on the egg shell pieces and for sanding, which comes afterward. Once all the pieces were in place and allowed to dry, I brushed over them twice with a black gesso that acts as a kind of grout around the shells. With 220 grit sandpaper, I sanded the gesso back, exposing the shells. On some other pieces, I tried using dyes and acrylic paint to stain the shells before lacquering but decided for this project to keep the shells white.
