The San Diego Zoo’s Mandrill group welcomed a new addition to their ranks last week. Female, Kesi, gave birth to a baby boy, and he is the first Mandrill born at the Zoo in over 14 years. Animal care staff had been watching for Kesi to give birth; but the night before, there were still no signs she was in labor. The next day, staff members said they were surprised to see Kesi walk out of her bedroom holding her new baby. “It’s like every day we would come in, in the morning, and think like there might be a baby – we don’t know,” Jenny Baublit, senior primate keeper at the San Diego Zoo. This is the first baby for Kesi and male Mandrill, Jasper. Photo Credits: San Diego Zoo/Tammy Spratt The Mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx) is the largest and most colorful of the Old World monkeys. The feathered pair were clearly having a hoot after moving into the home of their wildlife park keeper, Jimmy Robinson. The six-week-old burrowing owlets, nicknamed Linford and Christie, were hatched in an incubator, and are now being hand-reared by Jimmy - who works at Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire - and are given 24-hour care. An Unexpected, But Adorable, Rescue of a Baby Squirrel A family was enjoying an afternoon outside when they happened upon a tiny baby squirrel in their back yard. Its tail was wet and it absolutely refused to move from its spot. He was pearched precariously on top of rocks near a small stream - a strange spot for a baby squirrel to favor. Upon closer inspection, they realized that the squirrel wasn't alone! His baby brother was stuck between the rocks he was sitting on. Slowly, and very carefully, they moved the rocks away from the soaking wet, nearly drowning brother of the squirrel that was refusing to move, frightened out of his mind. Seeing how cold, wet and desperate the little guy was is absolutely heartbreaking! Thankfully, he started to perk right up as soon as he was dried off. :) And thanks to the kindness of strangers, these two baby squirrels were reunited!

Striped hyenas bred at Visakhapatnam zoo The New Year has brought in some good news for the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) here which announced the successful captive breeding of striped hyenas — a first in its history. This comes after two consecutive failures, when the two previous litters did not survive. Of the three cubs in the new litter, the zoo authorities could save one male, which is currently being looked after at the zoo hospital after its mother turned hostile. The two-month-old cub has been named Ayush. The birth of the cub holds particular significance, because striped hyena is listed as a ‘Near Threatened’ species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. “Indira Gandhi Zoological Park is the third zoo in the country, after Patna and Mysuru, to have successfully recorded captive breeding of hyenas. The zoo now has two male and one female striped hyenas.

Crowded baby bat clinic a barometer for Australia's bad weather By Daily Mail Reporter Updated: 09:20 EDT, 7 January 2011 Torrential rain has brought chaos to Australia, and not just to the humans who live there. Australian Bat Clinic and Wildlife Trauma Centre director Trish Wimberley and her carers have helped save 130 orphaned bats on the Gold Coast in past weeks. They saved 350 young bats during the 2008 storm season but this year think there's more going on than just wild weather. Baby bats at the Bat Clinic in Advancetown, which has helped at least 130 baby bats after the wet weather Worker Wendy Wimberley lovingly tends to baby bats at the Bat Clinic, where patient numbers are up this year Carers have visited several bat 'camps' on the coast in recent weeks to find four-week-old babies on the ground covered in maggots and fly eggs. Trish said: 'They're coming down to feed on the ground. 'Bats are a barometer to what is going on in the environment.
