About Social Justice Why Is Social Justice Unique? Founded in 1974, Social Justice is a quarterly nonprofit educational journal that seeks to promote human dignity, equality, peace, and genuine security. As one of the few independent journals from the 1970s to have survived, its contents reflect its origins and ability to renew its vitality through a series of often tumultuous decades. Its early focus on issues of crime, police repression, social control, and the penal system has expanded to encompass globalization, human and civil rights, border, citizenship, and immigration issues, environmental victims and health and safety concerns, social policies affecting welfare and education, ethnic and gender relations, and persistent global inequalities. The journal has framed its vision of social justice with an understanding of the international dimensions of power, inequality, and injustice. In doing so, it has formed part of an international community of progressive intellectuals, activists, and movements.
Asian American History The Asian Pacific American (APA) population is comprised of a dynamic and complex mix of ethnicities and cultures. Within this broad range of cultural variation, there are differences in socioeconomic status, acculturation patterns, ethnic traditions and geographical region which shape the unique experiences of APAs. As American society becomes more diverse both in racial and economic terms, it is in the best interests of APAs to increase awareness about APA history, educate future APA generations about racial biases and injustices in American history, and develop alliances with other minorities to create a unified stance against racial prejudice and exclusion. We must influence public policy and fight against biased policies that negatively and unfairly affect the APA population. We should be seen as relevant additions to society, not inconvenient political necessities in public policy. 1854 - People vs. 1858 - California passes a law to bar entry of Chinese and “Mongolians.” Ho v.
Home The Chinese-American Experience: An Introduction Under the racist slogan, "Chinese must go!" an anti-Chinese movement emerged that worked assiduously to deprive the Chinese of a means of making a living in the general economy. The movement’s goal was to drive them out of the country. Finally, Chinese workers were prevented from immigrating to America by the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. IQ Basics Graph drawn in Excel using the NORMDIST function. This is a quick explanation of IQ, put up due to popular demand. There are many books on psychology or intelligence that would provide a more rigorous explanation of IQ. What is intelligence? I.Q. = Intelligence Quotient Originally, "IQ" tests were created to be able to identify children who might need special education due to their retarded mental development (1). To relate the mental development of a child to the child's chronological age the IQ was invented. Thus the deviation IQ replaced the ratio IQ. What is a standard deviation (SD)? With the standard deviation and a mean, you can calculate percentiles. High IQ societies ask for certain percentile scores on IQ tests for you to be eligible to join them. There have been various classification systems for IQ. Terman's classification was (6): (Terman wrote the Stanford-Binet test (1), which has a SD of 16.) References (1) Berk, L.E. (1997).
