Perks of the Adobe Creative Residency, with Kelli Anderson In May of 2015, Adobe began their first creative residency program. I was lucky enough to meet with Becky Simpson and Kelli Anderson (via phone call) to learn about what exactly it means to be an Adobe creative resident and how the program is giving back to the creative community. {One year of living as an artist—FREE} Semi-Permanent. If you check out Adobe’s creative residency page, the first thing you’ll notice is their tagline: “Fostering creativity. And after speaking with Becky and Kelli, I can’t think of a better way to describe this program. If you haven’t done so yet, check out the first installment: “The Perks of Being an Adobe Creative Resident: Part 1 with Becky Simpson”! I asked Kelli what her reaction was after being chosen as a resident. “Sometimes you can get a good balance,” Kelli went on, “but if the projects you’re working on reach the same level of ambition and production, then they really are like full-time jobs.” {Trailblazing. Kelli: “I definitely feel pressure.

K&i and the Humanistic Approach to Design by Karl and Ida Mynhardt, owners of K&i Editor’s Note: K&i, a creative design agency run by husband-wife team Karl and Ida Mynhardt, reached out to HOW to tell us about their newly updated identity and relaunched website. After chatting a bit, we were intrigued to learn how living and working in Cape Town, South Africa (after previously living and working in London) has influenced the agency’s work. We find inspiration in everything, and often the most random things. It is because of these inherent characteristics why our ways of creating design have changed since relocating countries. We want to do good design for good people and are selective about the work we take on. We believe a handmade touch has the chance to deliver a message that speaks to people on a different level, to be more human, more approachable, more believable, more real. fastcodesign While Halloween won't be here in earnest until the end of the month, the countdown is definitely in full swing. Here to stoke anticipation is Montreal-based design duo Baboon with a series of creepy animated GIFs, revealed every day for the month of October. Featuring scary characters new and old—from Cousin Itt to Dracula, Michael Myers and the Grim Reaper—each GIF is illustrated by Baboon's Pablo Echeverri and Sylvain Rogé and animated by friend and motion designer Simon Lagneau. The trio started off the month by creating a long list of the monsters, ghosts and murders that haunted their childhoods, and are now diligently working their way through it. Maybe not, but we're certainly glad they do.

CSSGram What is This? For more background on CSS Image Effects, you can check out my blog series here, or watch my video from CSS Conf EU, which gives a baseline on blend modes and filters. Facebook Design Resources Diverse Device Hands Two different diverse hands holding various modern smartphones (iPhone 4-6+, Nexus, Windows Phone). Designing a landing page that sells — Active Collab Blog Designing a landing page that sells From awful to awesome (and everything in between) We ramped up our marketing efforts by making landing pages for PPC campaigns. Designing a landing page is similar to designing a website, but more focused on a single call to action. In our case, the goal was to make the visitor create a trial. Designing a website, you have several pages (eg. homepage, pricing, features…) at your disposal to persuade the visitor, but with a landing page you have only one. A landing page has to answer: Why you’re worth the time? All that on a single page. Before the design We first chose the focus of our campaign. Team collaborationWork organizationGetting paid Because there’s a great number of apps for managing to-do’s and collaboration, we decided to create a campaign that focused on the whole workflow: from project inception to getting paid. The first design was created without much internal collaboration. The result was awful — it was limp, lifeless, and uninspired. Final

The Great Compositions of Photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt Has someone ever asked you why you like an image? Beneath the surface of great picture, there is a geometric design in hiding. During World War II, photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt worked for the early version of the Associated Press and went on to become a Life Magazine photographer, taking over fifty cover shots for them. Words To Know 1:1.5 Ratio: The 35mm negative measures 36mm x 24mm. Keep these terms somewhere you can easily refer to, since without them it is difficult to navigate a composition. The Ballerinas Eisenstaedt has a number of famous images of ballerinas. By shifting his position while taking the picture, we can see the difference between a photograph which is organized on a horizontal and a photograph organized on a diagonal. The Sinister Diagonal Sinister diagonal in bold In general images are read from left to right. Eisenstaedt uses the Sinister Diagonal to draw our attention to the ballerina facing us. The Vertical & Horizontal The dominant vertical and horizontal lines.
