Create a map | BatchGeo Open Source GIS Lost Art of Computer Programming: Lifestyle Routing Lifestyle Routing Even with the best of maps and instruments, we can never fully chart our journeys. – Gail Pool The questions worth asking have not answers worth knowing, but rather they engender journeys worth taking. – Curt Brune This article describes the motivations behind and the inner workings of a "IP address to Google Map" mash-up application I wrote recently called Geo IP Route . Read on!. What should I do? Most of us have asked ourselves these types of questions at one time or another. Like all good questions these questions apply to many different levels of our existance, from superficial daily decisions to subdermal compromises of family and career to the innermost vexing decisions regarding ethics and morality. Off hand the questions arising from routine daily decision making are of little interest to me. No, I find the subtle, difficult questions much more intriguing. I would like to share with you one of my recent existential programming journeys. Read on for more ...

Gapminder: Unveiling the beauty of statistics for a fact based world view. GDAL: GDAL - Geospatial Data Abstraction Library Performing HTTP Geocoding with the Google Maps API The previous installment of this ongoing series covering the Google Maps API (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5), I introduced the API's new geocoding feature, released this past June 11. In this tutorial I showed you how to submit geocoding requests via JavaScript, which is convenient because it's easy to subsequently build a map using the retrieved coordinates. However, if you're interested in performing bulk geocoding for reason of storing a series of coordinates in a database, you might be interested in taking advantage of a second means for geocoding, accomplished by way of HTTP request. Storing the coordinates locally will not only decrease the number of required daily geocoding requests (limited to 50,000 daily), but it will speed your application by cutting down on the total requests required to ultimately build a map. A Simple Example Executing this script produces the following output (formatted for this article): <? <? Executing the revised script produces:

Homepage Web apps - Free Geography Tools Via Slashgeo comes word that Nokia’s Ovi Maps now has a 3D browser-based plugin to compete with Google Earth’s browser plugin. Works in Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Internet Explorer, and supports Mac in addition to Windows for the first three. Terrain resolution is fantastic, IMO better than in Google Earth. The only imagery currently available in 3D mode is satellite imagery, and it also looks pretty good, slightly better than Google Earth for my area. One quirk, though, is that for oblique views, only the closest terrain gets high-resolution imagery; notice in the upper-left-hand corner of the picture above, lower-res data is loaded. Controls are adequate, but not as smooth as those for Google Earth. Left button for scrollRight button for tilt and rotate; odd reverse direction for tilt compared to Google Earth – you move the mouse forward to increase terrain tilt, and back to decrease it.Scroll wheel for zoom There are 3D building views available for a limited number of cities (e.g.
