China vs United States As we discussed in yesterday’s post, whether the United States and China like it or not, the economic futures of both countries are intertwined. Everyone knows that China’s got more people and that its importance as an economic superpower has escalated in recent years. What you might not understand is how the differences between our countries, in economic philosophy, in population, in geography and in how the military is built and paid for ultimately play into the entire economic relationship. In addition to disabling autorun, the tool can also create a dummy autorun.inf file on removable drives, thereby “vaccinating†them from getting infected. 3. WordWeb is free and does one thing really, really well. WordWeb works when you’re offline and it could obviously help you improve your vocabulary. 4. If you frequently come back to your dorm room just to take back that pen drive you missed, Pen Drive Reminder is a must-have. Overheard on the Goldman Sachs Elevator An anonymous career banker inside Goldman Sachs opened a twitter account (@GSElevator) with the intention of revealing the hilarious banter that takes place in the privacy of the GS elevators. Since then, the account has evolved to include things overheard on trading floors, bullpens, lobbies and bars. Some of the conversations involve more than one person, and the participants are distinguishable by their number (#1, #2, #3). Probably so, but it's not that clear cut, and economics have been arguing the point for 30 years. Most studies tend to show that college-educated people end up making far more money in the course of their lifetimes. (The niggle: Usually, it's not worth paying for a private university.) Still, that evidence isn't totally cut and dry: What do you really learn in college? This graph makes a couple points in that debate: 1. Brass Knuckles and Whisky in Custom Suitcase A gentleman by the name of Tyler Riewer is fortunate to have the best friends on the planet. As a birthday gift, they created a custom suitcse fitted to hold a set of brass knuckles and a bottle of Bulleit Bourbon. The custom case features the words “Life is a daring adventure, or nothing,” on the exterior along with the phrase “sack up.” Inside, presumably an indicator that the contents are meant to prepare one for said adventure is the legend, “two roads to courage.” Frankly, I am in awe. Not only because of the choice of bourbon — harsh stuff, but good stuff — but the sheer precision and low-brow class of the entire affair.
Cruise Ship VS Nursing Home About 2 years ago my wife and I were on a cruise through the western Mediterranean aboard a Princess liner. At dinner we noticed an elderly lady sitting alone along the rail of the grand stairway in the main dining room. I also noticed that all the staff, ships officers, waiters, busboys, etc., all seemed very familiar with this lady. I asked our waiter who the lady was, expecting to be told that she owned the line, but he said he only knew that she had been on board for the last four cruises, back to back. As we left the dining room one evening I caught her eye and stopped to say hello. We chatted and I said, "I understand you've been on this ship for the last four cruises".
