Grammar Help The ESOL Essayist- The Introduction Paragraph How do you begin to write an introduction paragraph? Step #1: Most essays begin with a general statement (generalization). This sentence typically acts as the topic sentence for the paragraph. Step #2: Next, the supporting detail sentences are written to narrow the topic. In this first paragraph the writer must introduce the topic by making a thesis statement. The introduction should also hook the reader. Let's look at our sample introduction paragraph. English Punctuation - Learn English Free English Punctuation If you think punctuation doesn't matter, think again:- When you are speaking you use inflection, tone, nuance, pauses and word stress to communicate meaning. When you are writing you replace all this with punctuation. Using a full stop at the right time, can save a lot of embarassment:- Lynne Truss made a fortune out of pointing out that punctuation does indeed matter. The title, Eats shoots and leaves, comes from a joke about pandas:- A panda walks into a restaurant, sits down and orders a sandwich. There's another common joke:- An English professor wrote the words, “Woman without her man is nothing,” on the blackboard and directed his students to punctuate it correctly.The men wrote: “Woman, without her man, is nothing.”The women wrote: “Woman: Without her, man is nothing.”
Five Paragraph Essay Rap!, 1 min., silly Introductions and Conclusions Sometimes when we write an essay we forget that we're speaking to someone (a reader). We also forget that the beginning of our essay is technically the first impression that we make on the reader, while the conclusion is our last chance to get the reader's attention. Rather than focusing on writing an essay that is simply "correct" (in terms of grammar, following your assignment requirements, etc.) good writers also consider whether or not they've left a lasting impression on their reader. Think about it: the movies you've seen and the books you've read, the ones that really stand out in your mind, probably had an intriguing opening and a compelling ending. The Hook If you're not sure how to begin and end your essay, consider using what's often called the "hook" technique.
