One of the most valuable things a teacher can do for students is to help them identify resources for learning outside of class. If students can make a personal—even emotional—connection to material, they will go beyond what is required in an ESOL course in their study of English because it has become enjoyable, not just necessary. I knew I hit the jackpot when students begged to watch another episode of Fox Broadcasting Company’s hit musical comedy-drama Glee. For my advanced-level college students, I had created a listening log together with pre- and postviewing classroom activities on the first episode, titled “Pilot,” which originally aired in 2009. I use the term listening log to describe a series of tasks completed individually by students outside of class while watching the episode.

25 ideas for using unit word lists in the classroom
Many ELT series have unit word lists, either in the student book, or available in the teacher resources. However, few teachers make active use of these unit word lists on a regular basis. In an attempt to address this situation I have produced a set of 25 activities which teachers can easily incorporate into their regular teaching practice. All of the activities have the following three principles:

The evolution of the book - Julie Dreyfuss
Prior to the release of the Amazon Kindle in November 2007, Stephen Levy commented in his Newsweek article, “Amazon: Reinventing the Book,” on the concept of the book as an invention. Quoting Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos directly, Levy writes that “‘books are the last bastion of analog.” This phrasing suggests the book as a set of definable qualities that can be manipulated, redefined, and commodified. But Levy also issues a warning that eventually “the surge of technology will engulf all media.”
ONE-SENTENCE GAMES
More doesn’t always mean better. Smarter is better. One sentence may be as useful for teaching purposes as a wall of text with lots of words. My today’s post is a collection of one-sentence games (see Word Games if you’d like to try some games with words). These are games that require next to no time to prepare and might be used to help students retain new vocabulary and grammar, improve their speaking and writing, while playing around with the language. Similar to the Telescopic Text experiment, the aim of the game is to expand a phrase or a simple sentence into as long a sentence as possible by adding extra words.
