2012: The Year in Photos, Part 1 of 3 - In Focus 2012 was an eventful year, from big events like the London Summer Olympics and the U.S. presidential race, to regional conflicts in the Middle East and Africa, to smaller issues closer to home. Reverberations from last year's transformative Arab Spring still heavily affect Syria and Egypt; and the slow recovery from the recent global economic crisis brought bitter austerity measures to parts of Europe, leading to widespread protests. Collected here is Part 1 of a three-part photo summary of the last year, covering its first four months. Be sure to see Part 2 and Part 3. The series totals 135 images in all. Looking beyond space and time to cope with quantum theory Physicists have proposed an experiment that could force us to make a choice between extremes to describe the behaviour of the Universe. The proposal comes from an international team of researchers from Switzerland, Belgium, Spain and Singapore, and is published October 28 in Nature Physics. It is based on what the researchers call a 'hidden influence inequality'. "We are interested in whether we can explain the funky phenomena we observe without sacrificing our sense of things happening smoothly in space and time," says Jean-Daniel Bancal, one of the researchers behind the new result, who carried out the research at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. Excitingly, there is a real prospect of performing this test. The implications of quantum theory have been troubling physicists since the theory was invented in the early 20th Century. In the 1960s, John Bell came up with the first test to see whether entangled particles followed common sense. Quantum theory was the winner, it seemed.

News and Trends | 1 in 5 Park Jae-sang is a 34-year-old South Korean who planned to study business before he began tinkering with music. On American shores he is better known as Psy, the rapper-songwriter-producer behind the monster hit “Gangnam Style.” The earworm beat and the distinctive horse-riding dance that Psy performs in the video combined to make the song a smash. Released in July, the viral sensation mocking Korean-pop clichés has racked up over 800 million views on YouTube, surpassing Justin Bieber’s “Baby” video to become the most-viewed video of all time. The married father of two is the first Korean solo artist to have a top single in the U.S., and he is planning to record his next single in English. If it hits big, Psy may no longer be just a fleeting celebrity. Next Rainbow Oreos

Terrence Howard walks away | The Berkeley Beacon EBONI President Chris Hyacinthe chatted with Terrence Howard for about two hours in the Semel Theater. Terrence Howard, an Oscar-nominated actor known for roles in Hustle & Flow and Red Tails, surprised his audience in the Semel Theater Tuesday by saying that he plans to change his career focus. In an Inside the Actor’s Studio-style interview, Emerson’s Black Organization with Natural Interests President Chris Hyacinthe talked with the actor for almost two hours. They touched on acting, perseverance, and science — which Howard said is his actual passion. “I want to debunk Einstein,” Howard said with a sly grin, while the audience laughed. In a press conference before the event, Howard, the second of 11 children, told the Beacon that after his mother’s death in 2008, he realized that he had started acting to get her attention. He elaborated that he plans to experiment with the use of diamonds as medical tools. But he’s not necessarily done with acting yet. His minor deceit paid off.
