As time passed, the cat became more domesticated and tamed and other civilizations began to own them. Cats have always been popular household pets, though, for a short time, cats were associated with the devil. Don’t demonise social media, it can be a blessing for teens with problems | Micha Frazer-Carroll I remember my first phone. A sticky-buttoned Nokia, given to me by my mum when I was 11, to be used strictly for communication between myself and her (who else was I going to text?), on the way to and from school. I had to press “7” four times just to type the letter “s”. I’m still in my early twenties, but in the intervening years the world of communication has changed dramatically for kids and teenagers. A dossier of studies and news items have linked social media use by teenagers to mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicide. In adolescence, when status and popularity are given such importance, drawing comparisons with others’ lives has frequently been linked to low mood. Apps such as Instagram have increased anxieties over “missing out” and body image. Yet despite these concerns, statistics around social media and mental health have never rung true for me. It was an electric time to be a kid in America, buttons pinned to your stonewashed jean jacket, the first VMAs on your TV set, and maybe MJ’s moonwalk is gliding through your mind. It was also a tough time to come of age for Lauren Horowitz, a middle schooler who is half-Jewish and half-Chinese growing up in a White suburban Virginia town during what Wendy calls the “eighties-est year of the 1980s.” Lauren is smart, creative, and hilarious, as well as a phenomenally talented singer, but her favorite hobby is making original buttons with funny sayings on them. Throughout the book, Lauren is exploring her Chinese and Jewish heritage but she’s also forced to confront other people’s uninformed ideas of her. When Lauren later learns that it’s Cline and not Klein, she’s devastated.
