Glass-Steagall Act (1933) News Adapted from an article in the Law Library. The Glass-Steagall Act, also known as the Banking Act of 1933 (48 Stat. 162), was passed by Congress in 1933 and prohibits commercial banks from engaging in the investment business. It was enacted as an emergency response to the failure of nearly 5,000 banks during the Great Depression. The act was originally part of President Franklin D. Beginning in the 1900s, commercial banks established security affiliates that floated bond issues and underwrote corporate stock issues. As a result of the bank closings and the already devastated economy, public confidence in the U.S. financial structure was low. Investment banking consists mostly of securities underwriting and related activities; making a market in securities; and setting up corporate mergers, acquisitions, and restructuring. The Glass-Steagall Act restored public confidence in banking practices during the Great Depression.

Cingular Unlocks Blackjack for Free Searching around on the Web, I’ve found a lot of sites that will charge you between $25 and $35 to unlock your Samsung i607 Blackjack. However, I came across a post describing how to get your phone unlocked for free via Cingular. I decided to try it, since I’m legitimately headed to Europe this summer and need to unlock my phone. I couldn’t find much on the Web about it, so I thought I’d write up a comprehensive post about my experience unlocking the phone. I called Cingular’s International Care Center at (916) 843-4685 Tuesday morning and spoke with a customer service representative, who confirmed that I could unlock all my Cingular phones for international travel. After I read him the IMEI, he processed it through the computer and gave me an unlock code specific to my phone. I haven’t tested the phone with a SIM card from a different network, so I’m not sure if this actually worked. 5. Cingular/ATT Helps Unlocks Samsung Blackjack
