The cost of subsidising UK wind farms has dropped to an all-time low By Adam Vaughan Holger Leue/Getty Images The cost of subsidising offshore windfarms has dropped to a record low in the UK. Results of a government auction on Friday show windfarms will be built in 2025 for as little as £39.65 per megawatt hour, a drop of almost a third since the last offshore wind auction in 2017 and two thirds since one held in 2015. The rapid fall led wind power trade body RenewableUK to claim offshore wind is now the cheapest form of energy in the UK. The cost is less than half the controversial amount promised to EDF Energy to deliver Hinkley Point C, a nuclear power station in Somerset that is also due online in 2025.

UK Households Face Squeeze After Surprise Inflation Jump To 2.7% UK inflation unexpectedly rose to the highest level in six months in August, pushed up by the rising cost of theatre tickets and high street shops launching their new-season autumn clothing ranges. The Office for National Statistics said the consumer price index (CPI) jumped to 2.7% last month from 2.5% in July, confounding economists’ forecasts for the rate to fall to 2.4%. The surprise increase will prove unwelcome for hard-pressed British households, which had finally begun to see wages rising above inflation earlier this year, following a protracted squeeze on living standards triggered by the Brexit vote. Workers’ pay rises are gradually increasing, although they remain perilously close to inflation.

Amateur Treasure Hunters Stumble Across £150,000 Hoard Of 14th Century Gold Coins A group of amateur metal detectorists dug up a hoard of more than 550 rare gold and silver coins dating back to the 14th century. The treasure was found in a field in Buckinghamshire and is worth an estimated £150,000. The four men originally found 12 ornately decorated silver Edward I and II coins. But over the next few days, they found hundreds of coins – including 12 ultra-rare full gold nobles from the time of the Black Death. Andrew Winter, 38, brothers Tobiasz and Mateusz Nowak, 30 and 33, and Dariusz Fijalkowski, 44, slept in a tent by the hole to stop thieves during the dig. The hoard is being kept safe in a museum and will be independently evaluated before being sold, with the value split with the landowner in Hambleden, Buckinghamshire.
