'Starhopper': SpaceX engine testbed makes minute-long jump Media playback is unsupported on your device The American rocket company SpaceX conducted a successful flight of its "Starhopper" testbed on Tuesday. The vehicle lifted 150m into the air, moved sideways and then gently put itself back down onto the ground. Starhopper is part of an effort to develop a new engine that will burn liquid methane in contrast to the kerosene in the firm's current engines. This motor, known as the Raptor, will power SpaceX's next-generation Starship and Superheavy rockets. Tuesday's one-minute test, which took place at Boca Chica in Texas, was the second hop for the vehicle after a modest 18m jump in July.

Juncker raises prospect of emergency Brexit summit next week Jean-Claude Juncker has raised the prospect of an emergency summit of EU leaders next week to decide on a Brexit delay, blaming ongoing chaos in Theresa May’s cabinet. The European commission president said a letter from May requesting an extension to article 50, delaying the UK’s exit beyond 29 March, had not arrived overnight as expected. The 27 EU heads of state and government had expected to discuss the terms of request and come to a unanimous agreement on their response at a summit starting on Thursday in Brussels. But after a stormy cabinet meeting on Tuesday, a letter from Downing Street was not received by Donald Tusk, the president of the European council, who convenes the leaders’ summits. Juncker said it appeared the British cabinet could not agree on the content of the correspondence.
Parliament suspension sparks furious backlash Media playback is unsupported on your device The prime minister's decision to suspend Parliament has prompted an angry backlash from MPs and opponents of a no-deal Brexit. It sparked protests across the country, a legal challenge and a petition with more than a million signatures. The government said the five-week suspension in September and October will still allow time to debate Brexit. Coronavirus declared global health emergency by WHO Media playback is unsupported on your device The new coronavirus has been declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization, as the outbreak continues to spread outside China. "The main reason for this declaration is not what is happening in China but what is happening in other countries," said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. The concern is that it could spread to countries with weaker health systems. Meanwhile, the US has told its citizens not to travel to China. The state department issued a level four warning - having previously urged Americans to "reconsider" travel to China - and said any citizens in China "should consider departing using commercial means".
Brexit Extension Could Be Until 31 March 2020, EU Documents Reveal The EU has pencilled in April Fools’ Day 2020 as a leading option for Britain’s first day outside the bloc, should the UK government ask Brussels for a lengthy extension of article 50 in three weeks’ time, it can be revealed. The date was to be offered at the leaders’ summit last week if Theresa May had followed through on her promise to request a short extension in the event of passing her Brexit deal, and a longer one should it be rejected again by the House of Commons. Such was the disapproval of her cabinet, the prime minister only sought a short delay until 30 June in her formal letter. She was subsequently given an unconditional extension until 12 April, or a longer one to 22 May in the unlikely event of the withdrawal agreement being ratified this week. A one-year extension, ending on 31 March 2020, was, however, written into internal EU papers before the summit as an offer that could be made to May should she formally seek a longer extension, sources said.
Nato: Cyber-attack on one nation is attack on all Image copyright Getty Images Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg says all 29 member countries would respond to a serious cyber-attack on one of them. Writing in Prospect Magazine, he said such an incident would trigger a "collective defence commitment", known as Article 5 of its founding treaty. Article 5 has not been triggered since the 9/11 terror attacks on the US in 2001.
